When last we left our time traveler and surgeon, time caught up with the time traveler in the form of a bullet from a hitman.
I solve one puzzle
We start the episode with the police arriving at Tonkla’s place to arrest him. I get it now, all the pre-credit stuff comes from what I’m assuming is the original timeline. I don’t think this is a show with multiple time loops, so for now, that’s what I’m calling it.
This explains my confusion in episode 4 over Win still being on the case and getting the forensics. That was the original timeline, and the name he was given was Tonkla’s because that was the rock that killed Title. That’s why they are arresting him now.
My reward for figuring it out? Getting everything spelled out
Because the rest of this episode is a replay of the original timeline.
We see Great hitting the woman in the tunnel and fleeing. Since she dies there, someone else is going to have to shoot him to get him into the cardiac arrest that starts this all off.
Tyme sees the news about this and Den tells him about his cardiac arrest patient research. Tyme gets the same call from his girlfriend Nutcha, but we get to see him get dumped.
Next is a repeat of Great’s family dinner. They covered up the accident for him and he resents their concerns about their reputation. No one really cares about the dead woman.
There’s a lot of stuff from earlier episodes repeated, a lot, a lot
We watch Great stand there while Dome’s head is smashed and then help toss him into the water. His visions of the future were what he did the first time around. Got it.
Title seems to have recorded this on his dashcam, I don’t know if this is important.
The cat is back! Great pets it while being haunted by his recent involvement in the death of two different people. The clock says 4:50.
Great is at the hospital to pick up medication (sleeping medication, stress reliever, and pain relief) and Tyme overhears his name. It’s clearer here that he recognizes Great’s real name, as he must have back the er, second time they met. They knock into each other again as their first “meeting”. So his vision of walking away the second time around was a modified version of this? Because it’s not the same place in the hospital.
We learn something new!
In this original timeline with the version of Great involved in 2 deaths, Tyme followed him to a bar and seduced him. They go back to Great’s to start having sex on the pool table, and Great knocks the 4 ball into the hole for the first time. Since this is before he gets 4 minute powers, I don’t know what that means. A premonition?
In one of the more brutally realistic moments in a drama, Great pauses sex to go to the bathroom. While he’s there, Tyme sets up to record their intimate moment.
Tyme is about to upload this sultry footage to a porn site but hesitates. Then he looks at his picture of his mom and does it. I get it, it reminds him of his revenge, but it’s also an odd thing to do after seeing a picture of your mom.
The news about the footage gets out, and Great’s dad yells at him.
Back to more of the same, kind of
Tyme sends Grandma away and meets with Great’s dad who has that bag of money. Is he bribing Tyme to… not post videos of sex with Great on the internet? I guess?
We get a new piece of information here, as Great’s dad says he didn’t kill Tyme’s parents. He also claims they were the ones who started the online gambling business. He warns of the danger of revealing secrets and suggests Tyme should do nothing. Korn made a similar suggestion to Great in the last episode.
Great spots Tyme at the hospital and wants to know why he’s not answering texts, asks him to dinner, and we get comedy music. Great threatens embarrassment if Tyme doesn’t take him on a date.
Tyme takes the rich kid to a food stall. Great looks lost. He doesn’t care about his sex video being online and thinks it’s cool that Tyme is going against his Dad. He’s also afraid of dogs, which Tyme knows because he researched him.
Great is charming here and I feel like I’m starting to understand him. He’s a confused, irresponsible rich kid who makes bad choices that get him involved in people’s deaths.
But Tyme, though he also seems charmed, turns Great down. He thinks they shouldn’t see each other.
The whole Nan thing goes roughly the same
Tyme follows Korn to that bar/restaurant and cuts his neck, only for Great to show up. Great pulls down his mask. Later, Great waits outside the operating room for Tyme to emerge alone. They have the argument on the roof that Great foresaw.
Great follows Sa-Marn and does nothing while Nan dies. He stops Tyme from getting beaten up, but Tyme is furious he let Nan die. He thinks Great should have tried even at the risk of getting shot. It’s not foreshadowing because we already saw it happen later? I guess?
Great tells him to die, again, foreshadowing-not-foreshadowing? Tyme is getting shot at some point, we’ve seen this. The news about Great’s family gets leaked out again, presumably from Tyme. Korn’s helpful Uncle figure is smoking and looking evil as he watches the news.
Great confronts his parents for-the-first-time-again about their murderous behavior. He’s told to be grateful and chased by his mom who wants him to beg forgiveness from his dad.
Great drives off safely this time, but gets shot by black-hoodie-Tonkla in the elevator.
In case it’s not clear, I felt underwhelmed by this episode
A lot of this felt like a rewatch. This is a problem with time-loop stories when they show how things are different. I didn’t need to see most of it. I wonder, for people who struggled harder to follow or found it more confusing, did this help?
But here’s what I got from this episode:
Great and Tyme’s relationship got clarified. Does that mean that Tyme was trying to seduce Great when he took him to the skate park and basketball court in version 2? But Great, having made better choices about his involvement in people’s deaths, didn’t go for it the same way?
Speaking of the basketball court, that’s one timey-wimey moment we didn’t see repeated. It would fit into the original timeline as Tyme apologizing to Great for using him and uploading his sex video. So is there a reason they didn’t show that moment?
Does Tonkla learn about Great and Title’s involvement in Dome’s death from the dashcam footage?
I’m used to timey-wimey stories involving the main character learning more about the rules of their situation over the bulk of the show. We’re three-quarters in and Great only kinda sorta knows he maybe sees the future. Also, we need to find out the truth about Tyme and Great’s parents. I’m curious how all this will come together in the final two episodes.
