When last we left our grumpy and sunshine, grumpy finally smiled for sunshine.
Unsurprisingly, grumpy runs hot and cold
Do Hoe’s father nearly smacks Ju Yeong during practice, Do Hoe is the one to look upset. When the horrible man joins them for dinner Ju Yeong encourages him to do it more. No dude, no. Do Hoe’s father talks up his son’s taekwondo skills and asks after Hyeon Ho. There’s history here but it’s being kept secret for narrative tension.
Speaking of tension, in the bathroom Ju Yeong shows off his abs and forces Do Hoe to touch his thigh. Do Hoe literally sprays Ju Yeong with cold water and reminds him to stay out of his business. Later, he watches Ju Yeong talking to his mom outside and smiles when he hears him come back.
Don’t worry, everything still sucks
Ju Yeong makes him breakfast and Do Hoe apologizes for being harsh. While Do Hoe is out, Ju Yeong sees his dad bring in some of his classmates for a beating. He breaks in before it starts, saying they’ll get revenge on Do Hoe in the future.
We don’t get to see where that goes, but we see them get revenge on Do Hoe as he’s on his way home. Hyeon Ho watches and tells him not to tell his Dad or they’ll kill him.
Do Hoe angsty VOs about how there were a lot of things he didn’t understand. We get flashbacks of the classmates being silly together instead of beating each other. Do Hoe and Hyeon Ho share some kind of look. We get a morsel of information when his VO explains he didn’t think a close friend would be the one he hates the most.
Ju Yeong finds him walking home. Angsty Do Hoe VO explains that a stranger he thought he couldn’t become friends with became someone close.
Do Hoe is having a hard life
He asks if he can make it or if he’s cursed, he just wants to get out of this place. Ju Yeong tells him that he’s smart and works hard, so he can do anything he wants.
Do Hoe gives him a bag he’s been carrying, but worries the ice cream must be melted. But it’s freezing in Korea so no. From a distance, Hyeon Ho watches mysteriously.
Subversion of tropes! They are tending their own wounds. No, we don’t know where Ju Yeong’s came from. They talk about snow and Ju Yeong forces Do Hoe to eat the ice cream, he likes it.
Inspired by Do Hoe’s dream of real snow, Ju Yeong somehow makes snow. Do Hoe smiles and they crunch around in the tiny square of fake snow.
The fun doesn’t last, as Ju Yeong gets upset when Do Hoe goes easy on him during sparring. But Do Hoe knows he’s injured and thinks his dad is responsible. Ju Yeong denies it. Do Hoe pushes Ju Yeong to do as little as he can and leave.
Ju Yeong VOs that he also didn’t understand things back then, like why he understood Do Hoe when he was angry. DH starts crying and apologizes, he thinks hitting someone is ridiculous. Ju Yeong abruptly kisses him.
No, we don’t get to see what happens right after
Except that Ju Yeong takes off his cross necklace and Do Hoe struggles to math. Through the wall, Ju Yeong apologizes. He says he likes him and cares about him.
Do Hoe’s dad comes in drunk and abusive. He grabs his son and bad-mouths his mom, but Do Hoe says he’s happy his mom was happy after leaving.
Before things get worse, Ju Yeong pushes Do Hoe’s dad away, dragging Do Hoe outside. Ju Yeoung says his wounds are just from sparring. Do Hoe is ready to kiss Ju Yeong, but Ju Yeong is anxious since they’re outside. He did get caught once. They hide in Do Hoe’s father’s van.
It’s adorably awkward as they choreograph how to do it, then go in for a good kiss.
Korean dramas like to hide things
Did Ju Yeong’s injuries really come from sparring? I don’t trust the editing or the characters. I guess we’ll find out eventually. Along with what exactly went on between Hyeon Ho and Do Hoe.
Wow, kissing already! This is madness.
When it comes to real life, I’m with Do Hoe on hitting people. Violence in fiction can be fun, but nothing is fun about the realistic violence here. It’s just expressions of frustration and anger being taken out on people who don’t deserve it. No one wins and things only get worse. It’s bad enough that while I want Do Hoe to keep kissing Ju Yeong, I want him to leave town even more.
Alas, I don’t think Do Hoe and I will get our wish for another episode or two. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised!
