Love Game in Eastern Fantasy – Episode 19-20 – Recap and Review

When last we left our problematic secondary characters, they were dealing with love spells and weddings.

I get excited because we see the sword

I’ll save you from my disappointment by telling you nothing happens with the sword in these next two episodes. It’s still in that stone.

Mu Yao reports to Guo what she discovered: The Resentful Woman was sealed underneath Xingshan Hall. Later, she escaped from the seal to murder Mu Yao’s entire family. Now she’s trying to complete the Life Suction Formation in Xingshan Hall again.

I’m confused about how she went from sealed to murdering the family to the hall again.

But whatever, Mu Yao is preparing to take on the Resentful Woman again and gets faux hard rock for her training. Fu Yi shows up to confess that he originally only traveled with her on orders from his master to steal the map. But his feelings for her are real, and he knows she has feelings for him too.

Mu Yao says the kiss was an impulsive moment and walks away, looking ready to cry. She’s vowed to tackle the Resentful Woman by herself, which is a terrible idea.

Meanwhile, Fu Yi and Sheng get very drunk

The Marquis wakes up, and Miao Miao convinces him everything he saw was a nightmare. She leaves him to check on someone, though the bracelet stops her from saying who. She meets Mu Yao at the inn and they learn how the men have handled their feelings.

To add to the drama, it’s raining when they get to the tavern. Miao and drunk Sheng share loooooks.

The Marquis arrives to get in the way and take Miao Miao back. Miao Miao seems to be fighting the bracelet more because she tries to stay with Sheng. But Sheng and the Marquis insist she go with the Marquis. Neither Sheng nor Miao Miao looks happy as she leaves.

The Princess shows up for Fu Yi, so now everything is terrible.

From the carriage, Miao Miao sees children playing with the toy Sheng made for her. The bracelet can’t stop her from running to him to return the toy, but Sheng is gone. The Marquis finally wonders if she likes Sheng, but she denies it.

Mu Yao and Sheng are Sad and Alone and In The Rain. They decide to leave the next day, but Mu Yao has a task for her brother first. She’s sending him away so she’ll be alone to face the Resentful Woman and he doesn’t seem to catch on.

Don’t worry, Cui Cui still exists

And he’s wondering what’s going on. He finds Miao Miao, who is writing a letter to her dad about her wedding. She tells Cui Cui that her new husband will help him find his grandfather and gives him the toy and the letter to send to Sheng.

Fu Yi wakes up at the Princess’s and tries to escape, but the Princess tells him Mu Yao gave him to her. She plans to show up at Xingshan Hall for marriage and wants Fu Yi to be her groom. Fu Yi says he will not be doing this.

The Dowager Consort is having nightmares of Xingshan Hall burning a little girl. She’d hoped the upcoming wedding would banish the bad luck. She thinks the wedding is off until she hears it isn’t.

She sends her beloved maid, Madam Ru Yi, to meet the bride-to-be. Miao Miao impresses her, but then Madam Ru Yi sees the bracelet.

Today, Everyone Gets Married!

Or maybe not. Fu Yi kindly visits the Princess to try to stop her again. He explains that Mu Yao rescued him when he was injured and unconscious. Thinking he couldn’t hear, she shared her true feelings, but he could hear. While she put on a brave face with the world and even Sheng, he learned about the vulnerable person underneath.

But she hasn’t opened her heart since he woke up. Still, Mu Yao is the love of his life, and he’ll support her whether or not she loves him in return.

Madam Ru Yi explains the bracelet to the Marquis, it was used by “that witch from the Qilin Mountain” to enchant his father. She tells him to get rid of it.

As Miao Miao gets ready for her wedding, she learns the Marquis’s father went to explore the world before getting married and came back a changed man, unhappy and drinking, and passed away young. Before that, some kid in a hair ribbon from Quilin Mountain tried to assassinate him.

Miao Miao knows this is Sheng and wants to see him, but the maids remind her about her wedding. She can’t quite break free of the bracelet’s power.

The Marquis realizes that Miao Miao will take off the bracelet while preparing for the wedding and runs. But she hasn’t taken it off because it’s a love token.

The Marquis takes the bracelet off, supporting her because he loves her like a Good Man. Miao Miao runs away. The Marquis sobs because he thought she’d stay. Well, he’s an Okay Man.

I didn’t give the show enough credit

Because we get to see what Sheng was doing with all those flowers, and it’s perfect for Miao Miao, with the swing they made sitting in the middle.

She sits in the swing and cries, thinking about Sheng. But then he is there! And he finally gives her the gift from the market.

We flash back to when Cui Cui caught up to him and gave him the toy. Cui Cui, the little cupid, also thinks Sheng should read the letter. It says she wants to marry Sheng, not the Marquis. And she’d written his name on the toy, which to her was a symbol of hope.

She throws herself into his arms, sobbing and apologizing. He gives her a good hug back.

That’s right, he brought the dust demons back, and they show 99%. 1% is still holding out.

Mu Yao and Guo still need a wedding to happen

They need the wedding to catch the Resentful Woman and get the Princess and Marquis to help.

The Dowager Consort is having the nightmare again, with Pei Yu asking why she made her the Saintess, the Hall on fire, and the locked door. The cultivator involved, Tao, says she’s a cold-blooded murderer and will know what it’s like to kill her own daughter. It’s an odd threat.

She wakes, and Madam Ru Yi assures her it’s a dream. Right then, Pei Yun tells her that the Princess is in Xingshan Hall, ready to get married. The Princess said it should have been her 15 years ago. The Mu’s have left.

We get to see the sword in the stone again. But nope. Nothing happening.

Guo and his cultivators watch and wait for the Resentful Woman to connect to the formation she’s made, then they’ll attack. So, at least Mu Yao isn’t totally alone.

Mu Yao is waiting with one of Miao Miao’s team badges. She’s expecting to die and wants everyone to have peace and happiness.

It’s the perfect time for everyone to show up because TEAM! Sheng said she couldn’t fool him. Fu Yi says he’s not who she thinks and Mu Yao hugs him before he can finish. Miao Miao covers Cui Cui’s eyes because children should not see love. Sheng looks annoyed.

I guess we get the action in the next episodes

I’m so ready to see what happens with the sword. It’ll happen in the next episode, please? It’s Sheng, right?

We got a new piece of the puzzle that is Sheng. As a child, he maybe tried to kill the Marquis’s father. I don’t know what this means or how it’ll come together. At least the Marquis isn’t always annoying, so I can stand to see more of him.

Sheng doesn’t seem to remember this childhood murder event, like he doesn’t remember Quilin Mountain.

Does the fact Sheng could get the dust devils to come into the capital mean anything? To do with the sword?

Pei Yun is the least impressive henchman ever. Maybe she doesn’t want this revenge, so she’s weaponizing incompetence. At this point, the only reason the Resentful Woman is scary is because we know she slaughtered the Mu’s. Nothing she’s doing with Pei Yun is scary. Because they’re doing nothing.

I like that the group falling apart started with Miao Miao’s sudden engagement. She feels like the heart of the group. But I’m also glad everyone was a part of it, coming back together, well, except Mu Yao. Still, it makes them feel like a team, not something held together only by Miao Miao. I’m curious how the bad ending can still be a threat at this point when everyone loves each other so much.

The love triangles weren’t as annoying as they could have been because they were tied into the group’s unity. But I’m ready for a battle now. And the sword to leave that darned stone.
