Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist & Us The Series  – WDIW April 12th, 2025

Welcome to my Saturday blog post where I give thoughts on dramas I’m watching, whether at the beginning, middle, or end. Whatever I want, because I’m petty that way.

This week I recapped episodes 3-4 of When it rains, it pours. Our sexless leads get closer to their anonymous email pals as their frustrations with their personal lives boil over. Things will probably…

I also recapped episodes 17-18 of Love Game in Eastern Fantasy. A wooden bracelet and an evil statuette cause exciting problems for our heroes. Guys, don’t listen to evil statuettes.

Weirdly enough, today’s theme is “dental student”. It’s not my kink, it’s more that Thailand wants to be sure that we’re all brushing our teeth right, no matter who we’re dating.

Let’s start with an initial review of the BL:

Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist – แฟนที่ทันตแพทย์ส่วนใหญ่แนะนำ – 2025

Currently airing Thai dentist BL, I’ve watched 3 of 12 episodes.

A young man who streams himself eating sweets is forced to see the dental student who paid him to go on a date.

Here’s a link to the trailer.

The poster is a good advertisement for the tone of this show. If you need a break from the er, intensity of vampires and actors, here’s something extremely light. So light it’s nonsensical. So light I’m not always sure what’s going on.

But our (literally) poor streamer doesn’t want to go to the dentist

Or more specifically, at least at first, he doesn’t want to see this particular dental student. Because on that paid date the dental student told off some people talking loudly during a movie. To me, this is the action of a true hero, but for our poor streamer, this is enough for him to want to dump his date.

Not by telling him the date is over. But by tricking him onto a boat that he doesn’t get on. I guess this is comedy?

Present day, our poor streamer will do anything to avoid getting his root canal done by this guy, even going to a shady-looking alternative. Our dental student either has a hero complex or a thing for the streamer (this is a BL so I suspect the latter) and wants to save him from destroying his mouth.

From there, they repeatedly argue about nothing while the dental student helps the poor streamer. In between, we get more pieces of that paid first date to help us understand the character’s actions. Kinda. I’m still confused.

What this show has going for it

So far, even though the characters are students, it’s not another fluffy college BL. I don’t think I’ve seen the inside of a classroom yet.

The characters are unique. Our dental student is a quirky mix of sincere and arrogant, with an out-there sense of humor. Our poor streamer is brash and childish, but that’s hiding some self-worth issues and trauma. It’s good they’ve found each other because I’m not sure who else would put up with them.

I’m curious enough to keep going because I want to know why our poor streamer is so poor. I want to learn why our dental student was drawn to him at first sight. I like quirky characters and I’d love to see them grow and reveal their true selves to each other.

A show like this can work for me if it hits the right level of sincerity. Something like See Your Love, which is crazy goofy and ridiculous but also a favorite. If this show gets deeper into the characters, it could win my heart too.

And onto our next dental student, I finished:

Us – รักของเรา – 2025

Recently aired Thai melodramatic-slice-of-life GL with 12 episodes.

A young woman draws pictures to help her brother win over the heart of the woman she’s in love with.

Here’s a link to the trailer.

The romance between this dental student and her secret admirer was a sweet strong slow-burn for me in the first half (you can read my initial thoughts here).

Once our two leads got through the complicated, secrecy-filled beginning of their relationship their romance became overshadowed by family drama. How much you like it will depend on how much you like sweet, heartwarming moments and a swelling musical score.

It was a lot at once, packed into a short amount of time

Our leads dealt with devastating family issues, strengthened by their love for one another. The overall message, that love gives you the strength to deal with the hard stuff, is one I can endorse.

But I would have liked more depth and complexity. I feel like I witnessed some people go through hard times, but I didn’t get meaningful insights into their experiences. It was very surface-level.

Our evil patriarch was dealt with in a very true-to-life, banal way. I appreciate that it wasn’t complicated and over the top, but it felt a little unsatisfactory.

Outside of our sweet leads, my favorite character might have been the scheming secondary villain of the story. She walked around in bright red high heels, refusing to listen to people’s good advice or let love in. But the end of her arc was also a bit too gentle for me. She didn’t lose her edge, but I would have liked to see her use it.

I’m happy for all the characters

In the end, they triumphed by loving and supporting one another through hard times. I liked all of them, except our evil patriarch who I wasn’t supposed to like anyway, and seeing them happy was nice. I think our leads had great chemistry and their contrasting personalities worked well together.

It’s still my favorite GL, and if you’re looking for an optimistic show about the strength of love, this is here for you.

And if you prefer the high dramatics, screaming, and crying of something like Pluto, I get it.
