Pre-Recap Information:
This show is my punishment for complaining about crying in shows so much lately.
Not really, because I love crying (yelling, throwing things, hospital visits) when it comes to soap-y, lakorn-y shows. Shows where the character’s parents and being trapped by obligations lead to the crying, not their lover.
For various reasons, I didn’t watch it as it aired, but this show was on my radar because it looked similar to my all-time favorite, To Sir, With Love.
We’ve got an ultra-rich family that is in trouble. In this case, dire trouble, as they are at risk of all being murdered as political power shifts.
All our not-YET-literally-poor Prince has to do to save the lives of everyone he loves is to marry. But our prince doesn’t want to marry someone he doesn’t love. Saying no isn’t an option because his father is awful and, again, saving lives. But he’s determined to figure out a way to save everyone and NOT marry this poor woman.
On top of all that, the protective cousin of his fiancée is a hot violin player who is way too interested in him. Because he wants to make sure our Prince is right for his cousin. And stare at his lips. In the moonlight.
I think I’m really drawn to these kinds of stories, where characters have to defy their families and society. In particular, I like it when they don’t just run away, but work to figure out how to get what they want while within the very system that is constraining them.
For the record, I’m not aiming to compare this to To Sir, With Love
People are going to like one more than the other, and that’s fine. We live in a society.
But I will have fun noticing the inevitable similarities between two shows from the rich-gay-heir-in-a-historical-ish society genre. I like spotting tropes. It’s like a game, and all just for fun. The shows are clearly different in many ways.
