Dare You to Death – Episode 7-8 – Recap and Review

When last we left the good cop and the bad cop, they were getting busy on the office floor.

Before we get to that, flashback to a different almost-sex scene

At some party, Time watched with too much interest as Jay helped a drunk Fai into bed. As Jay leaves, Fai stops him, there’s staring, and the whole thing is being recorded.

Back in the present, Jade and Kamin are post-sex on the office floor. Jade worries about Kamin’s injury. Kamin does not worry about Jade’s injury.

So they have a competitive morning workout. Jade pretends to be hurt and to get a kiss, and Kamin admits he’d be upset if he really were hurt. But really, Jade wants Kamin to chill and go on a date, forget about the serial killer.

They eat satays. They do a photo booth. And then, Kamin gets a call.

Because the Truth or Dare killer is not on a date

They’re torturing Time, who knocked out Jay for them, not Cherreen. Oh well. Also, why do these people keep thinking that doing what the killer asks will save them? Because it’s not, the killer is too upset about Time’s whole filming people having sex thing.

Our heroes arrive in time to see Time get stabbed in the neck by a bizarre torture device, and then stand there.

Jade is saving his energy to fuss at Kamin for not calling Tankhun “doctor” over the corpse. Doctor Tankhun says Time died instantly, so standing there was fine.

They find the cards, which reveal what we already know about Time filming sex and moving the car. But the car belongs to Champ.

Cherreen receives the Truth or Dare letter

She tells Champ it includes a picture of the clinic, even though she already closed it. Champ gets her to tell him that on the night of the party, Fai wanted to prank everyone by taking sleeping pills and having Cherreen call the ambulance. Cherreen is worried that’s why Fai died.

Champ has also received a Truth or Dare letter.

Jade and Kamin question Champ, who admits to lending his car to Time and knows about the abortion. He does not tell them about the letters. But he gives them a USB drive and tells them to stay out of his and Cherreen’s lives.

Despite my suspicions about Jay, he was under guard at the hospital when Time was murdered. In theory, he couldn’t do it.

Our cops know about Cherreen’s clinic

There, they find Fai’s records, proving this is where she got the abortion. They wonder if Fai was really willing, and Bell was the only one involved. That’s grim.

A friendly scrapper tells them the place recently closed, and he saw Cherreen there once.

The USB Champ handed them contains a recording of his call with Cherreen, where she talks about the sleeping pills.

Our cops receive a Dare letter. It names a so-called Avenger who thinks he can handle everything, daring them to find out who the killer is among the remaining three. Abruptly, Kamin sends Jade to check on his brother.

But Jay sends Jade back home. Kamin wakes up Jade, drunk, gives him a big hug, and is a mess. He asks Jade to promise not to judge him if he tells him everything. Jade soothes him that he doesn’t have to rush. They can talk later.

Needy Kamin wants Jade to love him even if he’s not a good person. Jade promises that he loves him and hugggging!

The well-guarded Jay, Champ, and Cherreen secretly meet

Cherreen’s card accuses her of making Fai get an abortion as part of her plan. Cherreen says she didn’t get a Dare card. She and Champ were together when Time was killed, so they think Jay is the killer. They all accuse each other of being horrible, and none of them is wrong.

Cherreen suggests they focus on surviving. Instead of?

Meanwhile, Kamin is smoking and drinking. Jade joins him, and Kamin reveals his deep, dark secret. Because of a decision he made, one of the guys working for him died. Now, he’s so worried about Jade he can’t focus on solving the crime.

Jade isn’t going to leave Kamin to face this alone, so Kamin tries to order him off the case. But Jade won’t follow orders that don’t make sense.

But Jade will sulk and refuse to talk

He’s pretty much turned the tables on Kamin. In return, Kamin drags him off to the workout room. Jade gets to punch at Kamin, who has those mitt things on.

Jade reassures Kamin it’s not his fault that Some Guy died, and he needs to let it go. Kamin agrees easily, and Jade gets him on the floor and back to flirting.

But they’ve learned about Jay, Cherreen, and Champ’s meeting, and also found Seon Jae’s hideout. The latter is more important.

Meanwhile, Champ and Cherreen are fleeing to another province. Champ has a bag with knives in it, and Cherreen is reasonably nervous. She thinks Champ received a letter and has been told to kill her. Not that she doesn’t trust Champ, but…

No one on this show should trust anyone.

Kamin has a protective talisman for Jade

Not one from a temple, one he drew. Jade teases him, but takes it.

Lee and Yu join them to raid Seon Jae’s hideout. They rush into the building and shoot people while heavy metal-ish rock plays. They find Seon Jae, and Jade goes after him. Rather than follow him, Yu and Lee yell at him not to go alone, and then go in the other direction.

Jade chases Seon Jae with a weird amount of caution since he has a gun and Seon Jae doesn’t. Eventually, Seon Jae knocks Jade’s gun away.

There’s a scuffle, and Seon Jae brings out a knife. He’s trying to stab Jade in the chest through his badge when Kamin arrives and shoots Seon Jae in the leg. Kamin checks on Jade so Seon Jae can grab Jade’s gun. Jade uses Kamin’s gun to shoot him in the head.

So, no chance of getting information from him.

Jade credits the talisman in his badge for saving his life

Since it was his gun, Kamin wants to take responsibility for Seon Jae’s death. Jade wants to tell the truth. He did it to protect Kamin and will accept the outcome. Kissssssssing.

They learn that Champ only got ecstasy from Seon Jae once. But they track the location of some ketamine deal to Tonkla’s dorm. But Tonkla is dead, so he can’t be their killer.

The not-inappropriate doctor is here, Doctor Puth, reporting that there was no ketamine on Fai’s body. Kamin wants to transfer her body to make a “timeline”. Doctor Puth’s hesitant reaction to that odd question tracks, but also solidifies my feeling that he’s involved.

At some hotel, Champ and Cherreen snuggle and discuss their bright future. Then, per his Dare card, Champ drugs Cherreen and drives her somewhere. But he suddenly gets drowsy and falls asleep at the wheel, crashing the car.

Two suspicious, hoodie-clad people stand by the wreck.

Champ’s Dad and Kamin’s boss are pissed at Kamin for investigating Champ. Kamin accuses Champ of being the killer and gets slapped by Dad. Then, he’s taken off the case and suspended.

Jade is ready to beat up Champ’s Dad, but Kamin wants him calm and on the case. Still, Jade feels responsible, and we get hugging. Kamin is confident that they’ll get through this together. Kissing!

So Fai is still alive and working with Doctor Puth?

Doctor Puth’s hesitancy about the body makes me question if she’s really dead. Maybe he’s her brother and helped her stage her death. They did this to motivate the horrible friend group to start killing each other.

Two more episodes and I’ll know for sure.

IRL, someone dying in front of you while you are in charge of their safety is horribly traumatic. But the show rushes so quickly through the scene, with so little setup of feelings and relationships, that it loses all its weight. It makes Kamin’s revelation and feelings underwhelming.

That’s the general problem with this show. It feels rushed. If ever a show needed some dramatic slow-motion, it’s this one.

Besides the reveal of the killer(s), what will the next two episodes bring? Will Jay die? I doubt it. Champ and Cherreen may be done for, though. Will Kamin and Jade end up back in the US together? Will there be a break-up-time-skip? Either of those things seems very plausible.

Kamin has already proved himself by saving Jade’s life a few times, but I suspect one or both of them will be taken by the Truth or Dare killer. Personally, I’d rather it be Kamin at this point.

Really, I’d love to see them come up with a plan together, proving to Kamin that he doesn’t need to be alone or push Jade away anymore.

But we’ll see what we get!
