Khemjira – Episode 3-4 – Recap and Review

When last we left our cursed student and the man who won’t help him, it was backstory time.

And there’s more!

We’re back in time again with Pawat, Khemmika, and the “friendly” ghost who is Pawat’s younger brother, Chayod. Pawat and Khemmika are engaged, and Chayod isn’t happy.

Unfortunately, it’s time for World War II, and Pawat becomes a military doctor. He leaves Khemmika, who has a serious heart condition, in the care of her two friends and his brother.

After generously waiting for a year, Chayod thinks Khemmika will agree to marry him, but that’s a no.

Present-day Ghost Yod tells Paran he’s loved Khem since before she met him

Ah, “finders keepers” love. Also, this Khem doesn’t know him, and he needs to leave him alone. Then, Paran tries to send Yod’s spirit into a clay pot.

Khem has been listening in, but the kid spirits scare him, and Ghost Chayod hears and disappears. The kid spirits, Thong and Ake, were under orders to keep everyone out.

As usual, Paran won’t tell Khem anything. Outside, Ghost Chayod can’t get past a barrier and cries blood tears.

Next ghostly visitor for Paran is Khem’s Mom. She’s been protecting Khem all this time. Paran wants her to rest and promises to protect Khem while he’s here. Just, not be nice about it.

Jet steals Paran’s bicycle to take Khem into town

They meet Grandma Si, who cared for Paran like a grandson. She tells Jet he’s dragged serious trouble here, and Khem that his soul is weak, but his vital force is intact. She’ll help him if he needs it. Thanks, Grandma!

Paran is leading the afternoon chant. But without his bike, he has to walk into town looking super hot in all the meanings of the word, but also super cool in his sunglasses.

Once there, he calls for the protection of everyone in the village. It starts to pour, and under his white shirt, we see a big back tattoo.

Paran is still wet when he heads home, which is shocking continuity for a Thai show. Khem returns his bike, and Paran gives Khem a bracelet and tells him not to lose it.

The trouble-making students are still troublemaking

Jet wants to fight, Charn tries to keep things calm and gets punched. An adult has to send the troublemakers away.

Later, Charn and Jet exchange awkward thanks, followed by Jet shoving Charn into the water. Everyone discovers that wet and without glasses, Charn is super hot. And also nearly blind.

Khem’s karmic enemy attacks a forest spirit, which then attacks the delinquents as they stargaze and pee. The remaining girlfriend runs into town, hysterical. Her vital force is gone, but Grandma Si collects it and returns it.

Paran astral projects himself into some cave

There, he calls on a spirit and asks for forgiveness. It’s a snake! Who turns into a human form with snake-y qualities.

Meanwhile, Khem sleeps fretfully. Ghost Yod touches his face, and Khem’s eyes shoot open. He’s at some wooden structure that starts glitching, and then he’s outside Khemmika’s house, watching Pawat leave. Chayod holds him and strokes his face as he cries.

Then Khem is back in bed, Yod stroking his face.

Paran asks the snake guy, Phuchong, to release the three students, but he says it’s not him. There’s an intruder in his forest, and he blames Paran. The intruder would be Khem’s karmic enemy.

Khem’s Mom wakes Charn, who finds Khem has wandered to the end of the yard. He vanishes before Charn can reach him.

Phuchong agrees to help the three students, but there’s a fourth he can’t help. Paran returns to his body and learns Khem has vanished.

We’re still not done with the past

Khemmika gets a letter that Pawat was killed in action. Chayod comforts her, but it’s too much for her heart, and she dies. There are a series of flashbacks, and in the end we see Khem introducing himself as Khemmika to Pawat. I think we all knew this already? But now Khem is starting to understand.

And Khem is also not interested in Chayod’s violent, scary love. His Mom shows up to save him, and they hide in a very Halloween-esque wardrobe.

Chayod finds them, but so does Paran. He grabs Yod and chants until Yod accuses him of not loving Khem. Paran stops chanting to point out that Yod has only ever loved himself, and makes him see how scared Khem is.

Paran and Yod return to Paran’s body, where Paran dumps Yod’s spirit in the clay pot.

But they still need to physically find Khem, so back into the forest!

Charn can’t see, but apparently he can SEE. With Paran’s encouragement, he focuses on Khem and leads them to a tree. Paran chants, and Khem appears. Paran insists on carrying him home. Then, he uses his necklace and some chanting to calm Khem down as he sleeps.

Back in the past, Pawat didn’t die in combat, Yod lied. Khem cries as Pawat sobs over Khemmika’s death photo. Khem wakes and calls Paran Wat, apologizing and hugging him. Paran tells Khem he can cry and hug him, but he is not Pawat, Khem is not Khemmika, the past is in the past, and they’re two people who met by chance

Khem asks him to stay until he falls asleep. Paran continues to be cold and won’t hold his hand. But gradually, he moves his hand close enough for Khem to hold his pinky. Khem stops crying.

Jet encourages Charn to use his abilities to find the missing students

They’re not in great shape, but they are alive.

Phuchong confronts Khem’s karmic enemy. She tries to magic him, he sends her from his cave, but one of his scales falls off.

When they wake, Khem calls Paran Wat again, but apologizes and switches to Master. Paran goes back to being cold.

They’re not done with Yod yet. They release him from the pot so he can tell his story.

After everything, when he decided to die by suicide, he prayed that if there was a next life, he’d see Khemmika again.

Then, he encounters her soul in the forest

And the malevolent spirit that bound itself to her.

Evil karmic enemy tells Khemmika her next life will also suck. Khemmika doesn’t remember karmic enemy, or the name “Krongkwan”. The karmic enemy strangles Khemmika and claims she turned her into this.

Chayod rescues Khemmika, but she’s still upset with him. The evil spirit wants to know if Khemmika understands now what it’s like to be torn away from the one you love. She asks Yod to become her spirit servant. He’d rather be reborn as a beast, and vows to bind his spirit to Khemmika and protect her in every life.

Back in the present, he tells Paran and Khem that the spirit is named Ramphueng, is very powerful, and has lingered for more than four centuries.

Yod feels so, so bad about what he did

Of course, Khem forgives him and thanks him for his protection. Yod asks Paran to take care of Khem and disappears.

Paran struggles to eat breakfast because Khem stares at him. He’s back in cold mode, won’t help Khem, and reminds him of his promise to his grandfather.

But he will give Khem the clay pot that holds his mother’s spirit. After a tearful reunion, Khem tells Mom that Paran is harsh with him, but Mom says he worries about him more than anyone. He even saved his life when he was young.

I feel like an idiot, because of course, Paran saved him when he chased a dog as a kid, not Master Sek. And he carried him all the way back.

Mom thinks that Paran is a guardian who will watch over him. Khem isn’t sure, but reassures his mom he’s good at taking care of himself and will live a long life.

Before she leaves, Khem asks her to sing the lullaby she sang to him as a kid. Then she’s gone, and Paran says to rest in peace. Khem does blessings for her the next morning.

Khem has decided that Paran isn’t the worst, and he’ll stay there instead of going back to Bangkok, and help out if nothing else. Jet promises to help him ingratiate himself.

But Paran is listening in to the two of them, and … little smile? Yes.

We got pinky touching!

Well, and Paran allowed traumatized Khem to hug him. This is a slow burn, my favorite kind of burn. And I get it, I also wouldn’t want to start a relationship based on a past life. On the other hand, screw the promise to grandpa. Help the poor kid doomed to die in a few months, he doesn’t have to kiss him.

But I know that Paran will help him, and kiss him, so I can’t get too angry.

Grandma Si feels more important than the short amount of screentime she got this episode. She gave us the tidbit about Khem’s weak soul, and I’m hoping we get more. I want more Phuchong too. Is that scale falling off just meant to prove that Ramphueng is that strong, or will it lead to more?

I like Ramphueng in an acting/design sense, and it’s cool the way she prays on other spirits. She’s nicely creepy. I’m hoping there’s more to her than just a jilted love story. Was she also some kind of powerful magic user in the past?

Anyway, maybe Paran will pat Khem on the head in the next episode?
