We’ve got four very different people living in a house together, being young and stupid. It’s a little like an early reality TV show and childhood favorite of mine.

There’s a fun balance of characters, like an app sampler of personalities and sexual orientations. From the beginning, you know who is who based on who arrives late, who gets the biggest room, who already has a job, who does the cooking, etc. Everything else you need to know gets spilled during drunken conversation.

What little plot there is revolves around helping the virgin get together with his crush. Tonally, it stays very light. The three other housemates’ efforts are ridiculous and stupid. People taking the plot seriously might find it frustrating. I find it entertainingly absurd, like another show I enjoyed recapping.

At the same time, I genuinely appreciate the show’s frankness about sex. Unlike most dramas, the action-to-talk ratio is skewed towards talk. We’ve got four young men, it’s a topic that comes up. This feels true to life.

Also, I find it intriguing how unromantic the show is tonally. There aren’t any longing stares, tripping into each other’s arms, or typical romantic tropes. It isn’t telegraphed in the first episode which of the four housemates will end up together (though it’s not hard to figure out.)

In some ways that makes me anticipate romance more. I want to see these clumsy, unromantic young guys stumble into love.
