Love upon a Time – Episode 7-8 – Recap and Review

When last we left our reluctant time traveler and the stern-faced guard, Phop invited Nakun to share his bed.

But not that way, Phop’s a Gentleman

Nakun is having heart palpitations. Or maybe love.

Phop gives him alcohol to help him sleep. In return, Nakun admits he dreamt Cherd attacked him. Phop worries that focusing on the past is hurting him. Nakun should focus on the present. With Him.

The problem is, does Phop love Nakun-who-he-thinks-is-Klao or the pre-disappearance-real-Klao? Phop says even though Nakun has changed, his feelings for him haven’t. And he goes in for a kiss on the cheek.

But Nakun is still in turmoil in bed, thinking about Thee, Pun, and his mom. In a flashback, he worries she’s lonely while he’s at college. But she knew he’d become an adult with a partner one day. Furthermore, he should spread his wings and enjoy being young.

So, abandon her for Phop! But no, Nakun is still upset. His life is in the future, but Phop isn’t.

Nakun is not the only one in bed with heavy thoughts. Phop regrets letting time slip away, Kaew regrets falling for Jom, and shirtless Jom regrets being so harsh to Kaew.

Phop goes to Jom for courting advice

He has no time for Jom’s “you like MEN?” nonsense. He’s made his choice. And crazily, Jom gives good advice.

Phop gets close to Nakun, watching his reactions and trying to be helpful. He deciphers part of Klao’s notes, about a temple and a pond. With the help of Klao’s memories, Nakun realizes that’s where Klao was meeting people. He’s pleased, and Phop is pleased that he’s pleased.

Since they’re going to the temple for more New Year’s celebrations, Nakun can look for Klao’s pond. But once there, he uses a modern word to tell someone he’s living with Phop that… sounds like something more. Then, Phop tries to put a ring on his finger while everyone stares.

Nakun doesn’t want the ring, but Phop vows to put it on his finger one day.

Phop gets closer again by taking Nakun’s hand and calling it soft. But a song about love takes Nakun’s mood back down.

He excuses himself to wander in the forest and run into Cherd. Cherd’s heard rumors about Nakun and Phop. Nakun punches him. Cherd still thinks Nakun is with Pim and punches him back.

Nakun denies any feelings for Phop. Cherd is going to punch him again, but FINALLY Phop comes to the rescue.

Nakun says he didn’t mean what he said, but Phop already knows

Jom is distracted from doctoring because he’s looking for Kaew. Phop realizes that Jom’s advice was based on everything Kaew does for him, but Jom STILL denies his feelings. And admits Kaew cursed him.

Nakun remembers Pun and Thee talking about past lives, and realizes this curse does its job.

At home, Phop wants to know what Nakun feels for him. He doesn’t answer, and then Phop’s parents want his help getting Phop and Varna together. Immediately after that, he goes missing.

Harn is conveniently there to suggest to Phop that Nakun’s gone to see Pim.

Oh no! Kaew is crying in bed! Jom brings food this time, but Kaew won’t see him. Jom sits in front of the door, promising to stay until Kaew’s anger abates. Kaew leans on the other side of the door and cries. It’s Too Much.

Phop knows to look for Nakun in their childhood ricefield. Screw what his parents said, he’ll only spend his life with Nakun. He still wants to know Nakun’s feelings, and his answers are a kiss on the LIPS.

Phop gets INTO it, but Nakun is crying

He saw the stares they received earlier. If they were where he’s from, he wouldn’t care, but it’s different here. Phop wants to go to a place where they can express their love. Yes. Future Phop!

Nakun encourages Phop to marry and have kids. He half-back-hugs Phop, begging him to let go of this love. As Phop guides him home, Nakun hopes that if there is a next life, they’ll meet in a world where men can love freely.

That night, in Nakun’s nightmare/flashbacks, Klao is tied up and tossed in the water. He struggles, then starts to pray.

Nakun wakes. He realizes the Oracle described Klao dying in the water.

Rather than sleep, he wanders the forest looking for that pond again. Cherd is there because he always is, and also, he’s worried Nakun’s memories are returning.

Luckily, the Oracle finds Nakun first, and notices he’s being followed. Nakun tells her about time travel and his mission, but she says he hasn’t time-traveled, he’s Klao. She pours water from one bowl to another to illustrate how the water doesn’t change, like him in different times. I think.

As he died, Klao prayed that he’d return to fix things and protect those he loves. The Oracle explains that the knot must be untied by the very hand that bound it, which is him.

To return to his time, he can just use that rock. Except now that Kaew used it to curse Jom, he can’t. Annoyed, the Oracle dumps water on Nakun.

He wakes to a shirtless, sad Phop

Apparently, he was found in the forest, dry, and Phop brought him back. Nakun isn’t sure if that was all a dream, but if he’s been reincarnated, he IS Klao.

Phop won’t forbid Nakun from going anywhere anymore. Nakun goes to see Kaew to tell him to make up with Jom. Then, he goes to Jom to convince him of the same. I think to save poor Thee and Pun from the curse.

Jom shares a terrible story about a lord and a servant who were in love. The lord’s father beat the servant to death, and the lord died soon after. Nakun points out it’s the father, not their love, that is to blame.

And those lovers never wanted to part. Why has Jom abandoned Kaew?

Chuay overhears everything and asks what we’re asking: Has Nakun really given up on Phop? Chuay doesn’t want lovers to be torn apart. Or for history to repeat itself.

Good point! Nakun meets with Phop at the tea house

He tells Phop everything he’s kept secret. And he learns that Klao’s fight in the teahouse was because Pim came in with Some Guy and ignored Klao. But why did Pim behave that way?

Nakun has realized Phop is the person he trusts most, and won’t hide things anymore. Now, he needs Phop to come with him to a brothel. In disguise so he doesn’t ruin his reputation.

At the brothel, Nakun spends a lot of time and money to get Pim to say Cherd is too stupid to sell opium. Also, she guilts him for treating her like someone who can be bought, and not a friend.

But when he leaves, she takes the money and looks mysterious.

Outside, Cherd confronts Nakun about what he remembers. But surprise, here’s Harn! As Nakun leaves, Harn recognizes Phop in his disguise.

Back home, Phop gives Nakun more sleep alcohol

They agree that Cherd IS too stupid to be the mastermind. They’ve also noticed Harn always showing up, and wonder if he’s also looking into Cherd.

Tipsy, grateful Nakun moves Phop to try for another cheek kiss. But Nakun flees.

Unfortunately, some ladies saw them. These ladies make snide comments to Phop’s mother about Nakun and Phop, which our guys learn about. Phop won’t let this change anything, and he’s certain his mother will come to love anyone he loves.

Nakun is less certain, but Phop promises.

Phop and his crew intercept some opium. Rather than destroy it, they use it to lure the bad guys to get it. This works almost immediately. Unfortunately, Nakun secretly follows Phop, and the bad guys attack him.

Phop protects Nakun from a sword to the head, but Nakun is traumatized and needs a hug.

At home, Nakun guesses that because of how fast the bad guys showed up, someone in Phop’s Patrol Department must be involved.

And, he’s ready to be scolded. But Phop knows he is upset already. He only humbly asks Nakun to think more of him, because if anything happened to Nakun, Phop would perish of a broken heart.

Nakun promises, and Phop is into his new, clingy attitude. He knows hardships await, but he will protect Nakun with all his might. Can he care for Nakun to his last breath?

Nakun gives a yes kiss. Domundi sex scene time! It’s something between The Next Prince and Khemjira, plus sexy love declarations.

Poor Nakun is a messy mess of feelings

He’s pushing Jom to make up with Kaew, while doing exactly what Jom did, urging Phop to get a wife and kids.

To be fair, Nakun’s situation is more complicated, since it involves time travel. It feels like Nakun can handle homophobia in his own time, but being in the past makes it harder.

Also, what the Oracle says is complicated. Or maybe it’s the subs. Or maybe I’m being dense. But I guess Klao… summoned Nakun? But Nakun is Klao reincarnated, so they are essentially the same person? Which is why Nakun is slowly behaving more like Klao? I think?

And now he can’t go back because Kaew used the rock. At all? What if Kaew and Jom fix things? Will the rock be usable again?

Klao refused to confide in Phop and ended up dead. I’m glad that Nakun realized repeating what Klao did would only repeat Klao’s fate.

Meanwhile, Phop is just YEARNING.

But I still have no idea how, or in what time, they’ll end up together.
