Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri as "Jim" and Mix Sahaphap Wongratch as "Wen" in episode 1 of Moonlight Chicken

Moonlight Chicken  – Episode 1 – Recap and Review

Recap
A news report tells us about the economic situation in Pattaya and how restaurants are raising prices. They interview Uncle Jim, owner of Moonlight Chicken, who isn’t raising prices.

Cutting from the news report, we meet his employee Leng, his nephew Li Ming who also works there, and Kaipa, whose mother runs a nearby meat vendor. Everyone clears out and Uncle Jim discovers a drunk man slumped over a table, Wen. When he wakes, there are sexy stares.

While waiting on Wen’s ride, Jim opens a ‘Full Moon’ beer, and tells Wen that he can only afford one a day. Wen says he’ll be okay on his own but Jim doesn’t want to leave him. They basically go on a date, walk through the streets, drink, talk about the moon, and pray with an older friend of Jim’s. They even share a mooncake.

Wen gets drunker and clingier with Jim, who brings him to his place to throw up in a corner. Left on his own, Wen wanders into Li Ming’s room for some awkwardness.

In Jim’s room, they establish their mutual desire for men. Wen is interested, Jim has scruples (also Wen just threw up), but Wen gets his way. Before the drunk sex, Jim wants it clear it’ll be just one night.

The next morning, Wen gets in some cat treat PPL and studies Jim’s DVD collection. Before they part, Wen shows interest in more with Jim, but Jim is kind but firm in saying this is for the best.

Yet after Jim gets chicken from Kaipa and his lively mother, he ends up at the same place as Wen for breakfast. While a bird chirps constantly Wen flirts and then pays for the meal as thanks for Jim’s ‘services’.

Wen goes home to a note on the fridge and two chargers plugged into the wall. He lays in bed and thinks about last night’s sex. Jim is also thinking about Wen while Leng babbles about the rising cost of beer.

Li Ming takes a delivery to a rich family. Inside he startles a young man who drops a bottle of liquor and starts signing angrily. Li Ming can’t understand and leaves.

Li Ming asks Leng about the guy, learning his name is Heart and he went deaf a few years ago from illness. He doesn’t go to school or out.

Wen is at the gym watching Jim’s interview from earlier. A blonde friend asks Wen about dealing with ‘Alan’. Wen asks for advice on one-night stands. The friend says terrible garbage about not having feelings.

Wen stays out after, drinking beer and looking at the moon. Jim finds Wen’s work ID at the restaurant and also looks at the moon.

Jim takes Li Ming to Heart’s place because Heart says Li Ming broke the bottle. Li Ming is indignant, but Jim feels they can’t do anything since Heart’s father is a cop and they’re poor. Heart’s parents agree to go 50/50 for the expensive liquor. Rather than let his Uncle pay, Li Ming offers to work for Heart’s family.

Which means Jim needs someone else to help at the diner. Wen shows up for a can of beer. He’s flirty, but Jim gives him his work ID and shoots him down. Wen suggests he’s there for the new job, and Jim says he’ll hire him but no sex. They finally exchange names, and also meaningful stares.

Thoughts
I googled a few things so you don’t have to:

Pattaya is a city on the coast about 62 miles southeast of Bangkok.

Hainan is a southern island province of China, on that island is the city of Sanya which I’ve heard mentioned as a vacation spot in many a Chinese drama. Hainanese chicken originates from there.

There were some confusing subtitles around the mooncakes so I looked it up, and it seems there are implications about unity and family in sharing them. So the older lady was showing her support for our OTP by having them share the mooncake. Maybe she watches BL.

Now onto my thoughts.

First off, to get it out of the way, there are production issues throughout the series. There’s some distracting audio, like the bird that wouldn’t stop during Wen and Jim’s breakfast. The lighting is in general more interesting than many Thai BLs, but then some shots look bleached out and terrible. And while the 29ish-year-old Earth Pirapat tries with his mannerisms and bearing, to me Uncle Jim doesn’t look like he’s in his late 30s.

Onto everything else. This is one of the most down-to-earth BLs I’ve seen, even more so than the Taiwanese ones. Our characters here are people with jobs and friends and families and financial problems just going about life. The set-up for our lead couple is a drunken-one-night-stand.

There’s nothing big and dramatic, no real central conflict kicked off in this first episode past Wen’s neediness and Jim’s weariness. There are hints of conflicts to come with the mysterious ‘Alan’ and potential financial issues. Some people might find it boring, and I understand if you miss the more outlandish-fun setups typical in Thai BL.

But I’m here for the peaceful feeling of wandering around the quiet streets of Pattaya at night with nothing to do but enjoy the moment.
