Gemini Norawit Titicharoenrak as Heart and Fourth Nattawat Jirochtikul as "Li Ming" in episode 2 of Moonlight Chicken

Moonlight Chicken  – Episode 2 – Recap and Review

Recap
At the restaurant the next day Jim warns Wen that it’ll be real work, he might be flirting. Wen says he works hard to get what he wants, he’s definitely flirting.

Li Ming meets Wen officially, though Li Ming recognizes him from the other night. Jim defensively says Wen is a friend and then annoys Li Ming by telling him not to fight at his new job.

At his new job, Heart gets in the way of Li Ming’s cleaning and causes them to knock over a bucket of water. Li Ming forces him to help mop it up. This may also be flirting.

After work, Wen tries to get Jim to join him for a beer but Jim sends him away, though he gives him a beer for the road.

Leng tells Gaipa about the new employee, who looks too well-off for the job. Gaipa shows up at the restaurant with dessert to share, checking out Wen. Jim does a terrible job of introducing the two and Gaipa recognizes a rival but still offers Wen some dessert.

Li Ming’s classmates are talking about college and trying to set him up with a girl, which he rejects. Uncle Jim then tries to push him into tutoring and Li Ming feels he’s getting nagged.

Li Min cleans and Heart tries to get him to watch a movie together but Li Ming thinks he’s being set up. Heart apologizes and explains he didn’t realize his parents knew Li Ming. Li Ming accepts easily and joins him on the couch.

At home, Jim contemplates bills with careful notes on them written by Gaipa, and an empty can of ‘Full Moon’ that clearly represents Wen. Poor guy, he’s got two hot young men after him.

Leng and his girlfriend Praew show up at Jim’s because she’s pregnant and Leng has no parents or money. The next day Jim goes to pay a bill but changes course and goes to a jewelry store instead.

He runs into Wen and they go for lunch together on their second not-date. They talk about work and finances and Wen buys Jim fruit.

At the mall Wen sees Li Ming checking out the ‘Work and Travel’ booth and Li Ming admits this is what he wants. Wen encourages him to get more information, and gives him advice and his contact info. Li Ming hasn’t told Jim yet.

Heart waits anxiously for Li Ming but acts cool when he arrives. He gets Li Ming to watch another movie, and thanks him for being his ears. Li Ming offers to take him out to a movie but Heart says his mom hasn’t let him go out since he’s been deaf.

Jim gives Leng the necklace he bought as a dowry for Praew. Leng tells Jim to pick between Gaipa and Wen.

When driving Wen to a work emergency, Jim backs up into someone. His insurance is expired so Wen pays them off, and they argue over whether Jim will pay him back. While Wen deals with work, Jim seems to make his choice by buying two beers nearby. Then he loses confidence when he sees Wen talking with one of the other workers.

Wen finds him drinking in a stairwell. They talk about their dreams, Jim wants money to support those he loves. Wen wants a home where someone waits for him and he has peace of mind, not just a place he sleeps. He tries to kiss Jim but Jim rejects him, and Wen apologizes for making him uncomfortable. Then rests his head on his shoulder.

Jim says he isn’t fit to be anyone’s home, but Wen stays resting against him.

Thoughts
I love the subtle back-and-forth between Wen and Jim, a combination of flirting and learning more about each other. Wen is pushing, but Jim is also playing red-light-green-light with him, encouraging him at times and then putting a stop to things.

I also like the more subtle difference in their financial situation. It’s not a rich/poor binary with a rich chaebol pursuing the maid’s daughter. Wen has more money than Jim, and that matters, but Wen has a job that demands time and sacrifice too.

What Wen doesn’t have are family and friends who depend on him for support. In fact, he seems to be looking for that and it’s fair for Jim to be nervous that he’s going to end up responsible for one more person. Plus, Jim doesn’t seem good at letting others help him.

This watch I picked up better on all of Jim’s yearning for Wen, expressed via beer can. He won’t drink beer with Wen but he’ll give him one to take home. Then he contemplates Gaipa’s helpful notes versus the empty beer can. Then he gets two beers but loses courage and doesn’t bring them to Wen. Rather than Jim expressing himself via dialogue, this shows everything he’s feeling.

Wen is so open and nice, he’s definitely hard to resist. It makes sense to me that despite barely knowing him, Li Ming decided to share his hopes for his future with him. Wen also isn’t that much older than him.

Heart and Li Ming are adorable. Heart is this ill-socialized prince but Li Ming sees how difficult Heart’s living situation is. He doesn’t let Heart bully him, but he immediately forgives Heart when he apologizes. It’s lovely to see.
