Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri as "Jim" and Mix Sahaphap Wongratch as "Wen" in episode 7 of Moonlight Chicken

Moonlight Chicken  – Episode 7 – Finale – Recap and Review

Recap
Wen is there while Alan does physical therapy, but isn’t focused. As they leave the hospital, Alan tells Wen that his sister-in-law is taking care of him, and knows about the break-up.

Wen meets up with Jim, who asks if he’s okay and invites him out to eat. They eat somtum on the beach. Wen tries to get Jim to be romantic. Wen feels that he’s cleaned up his mess but Jim doesn’t trust him. Jim really doesn’t trust himself, and Wen accuses Jim of overthinking things.

Wen offers Jim a bite of chicken to get Jim to commit to him, and Jim eats it.

Jim comes by Gaipa’s for chicken and Gaipa has to hide tears, but his mom sweetly consoles him.

Li Ming’s mom, Jam, shows up. She’s getting married and wants Li Ming to move home with her. It’s a lot. Li Ming is annoyed. He tries to escape to Heart’s but Jim stops him. He wants answers about what he saw between Li Ming and Heart and Li Ming doesn’t want to give them. Jim’s worried about Li Ming being poor and gay, and doesn’t realize Jam is nearby and hears them.

Jam blames living with Jim for Li Ming being gay, and Jim defends himself. They’re both overwhelmed. Jam wants Jim’s help in convincing Li Ming to go with her and offers to help Jim get the loan using her fiance’s property in return.

Li Ming hangs with Leng, who is grappling with becoming a father as Li Ming grapples with dealing with his mother.

Jim goes to Wen’s, and Wen reassures him that Li Ming being gay has nothing to do with him. Jim can’t stop worrying. Wen advises Jim to listen to his nephew.

Jim and Wen flirt, and Wen even gets a kiss on the cheek, but Jim sleeps on the couch.

Leng is trying to encourage Gaipa to find another guy when Gaipa’s mother collapses. At the hospital, Gaipa sobs in Jim’s arms after breaking the news that she’d passed.

At the funeral Leng, Jim, Li Ming, and Wen are helping with food. Wen encourages Jim to keep Gaipa company. Alan shows up because he’s in charge of Gaipa’s mother’s account at the bank.

Heart shows up with his family, and his parents are now using some signs.

Jim’s landlord is there, and pressures Jim to make a decision. He also mentions that Gaipa has been left a fortune by his mom.

Jim remembers Beam’s funeral, and Beam’s father taking all his money because the accounts were under Beam’s name.

Alan goes outside and Jim helps him when he drops his crutch. Alan blames him for the breakup, but Jim points out he wasn’t around at the time. He apologizes anyway.

Jim brings Wen food, and Wen reassures Jim that he wasn’t the cause of the breakup.

Later, Li Ming and Jim talk about Li Ming moving in with Jam. Jim does seem to have taken Wen’s advice seriously, listening as Li Ming explains his complicated feelings for a mom who hasn’t been around. Li Ming doesn’t find it easy to say he loves her, but it’s easy to say he loves Jim. Jim brings him a beer and teases him about Heart.

Over dinner, Li Ming asks his mother about whether she loves her fiance and his dad. She feels that her love for them is different. Li Ming tells her he doesn’t want to move, and Jim backs him up. They all eat together.

Gaipa memorializes his mom and sings the theme song while crying. Jim comforts him as smoke floats from the crematorium.

And other things end too, as Wen takes Alan home and gives him his key.

And Jim gives his sister back the title deed and cancels his lease. Wen holds his hand as the lights turn off outside the restaurant.

Thoughts
Things I interneted so you don’t have to:

Somtum is a type of green papaya salad, associated with northeast Thailand, which is apparently where Jim is from.

Gaipa and Leng talk about who gets called ‘ar’ or ‘lung’, which are terms to refer to uncles, with ‘lung’ being the older uncle and ‘ar’ being the younger one. Jim gets called ‘lung’ by everyone.

Onto my thoughts about the show.

Poor Gaipa’s mom, Ms Hong, feels like the victim of the slice-of-life genre. Gotta show death so that we feel the value of life. I’d be upset about the sudden loss and sweet Gaipa having to cry even more, but we get to see a Thai funeral, which is interesting. It also went well with the true, final ending of Wen and Alan’s relationship, and Jim deciding not to get a loan to save his restaurant.

Still, I appreciated the moments between Wen and Jim here. On my first watch, I thought the Alan injury would be some big annoying conflict, but it’s more about showing how Wen really is done with the relationship, even if he still cares for Alan.

While Jim remains hesitant, he invites Wen out to eat and brings him food that he pushes him to eat. He repeatedly goes to Wen for reassurance, after arguing with Jam about Li Ming and after talking with Alan. He also listens when Wen tells him to comfort Gaipa. So while he won’t sleep in the bed Wen shared with Alan (which, I kinda get) he’s looking to Wen for more and more support.

Wen is understandably impatient, but I think he sees the progress too.

Not much Li Ming and Heart in this episode. Poor Li Ming is probably the most responsible person on the show and yet Jim has been too full of worries to see that. Luckily Li Ming still appreciates his Uncle’s efforts, and can easily say he loves him.

Li Ming for best nephew of the year.
