When last we left our healthy twin and angry rebel, our angry rebel got his twin back and convinced-forced him to come clean about the twin thing.
Time for disagreements about the next mission
Sean gives the pictures he and White took to UNAR. They argue over what to do with a stolen truck full of drugs. UNAR wants to involve the police, Sean does not.
White sees his former self in UNAR.
Eugene and Sean’s mural friend, Namo, are at the protests. Gram talks to Eugene, who is annoyed no one tells her anything and has guessed most of it. Gram asks if she can wait. She says she’s already already waited a long time and can wait longer.
Sean and White keep an eye on Tawi’s building
White discovers Sean left his button there. He puts it onto the bracelet for Sean to wear. They take turns watching for Tawi to send trucks out. As soon as they see them, they steal one.
Sean wants to dump the drugs in front of Tawi’s, but this is dangerous for many reasons. Where to leave the truck feels like something they should have discussed earlier but it’s more dramatic now.
At White’s encouragement, Sean figures out where he can safely leave the truck with the police. Yok is indignant that Sean listens to White over him, and he’s not wrong. White ignores the teasing and cuddles Sean, it’s cute.
Meanwhile, Black and Todd repeat their earlier fight. Todd can’t kill Black, but Black is acting like he could kill Todd. Todd feels they can’t kill each other. Ultimately, they want the same thing just to get it in different ways.
Black doesn’t want Todd so confident and Todd pushes him to shoot him if he can.
The truck encounters a checkpoint, UNAR betrayed them
Sean drives through and they abandon the truck, running for where Gumpa is waiting in his car. Yok gets shot, and Sean creates a diversion with fireworks, but they all make it.
Yok is in bad shape, and Sean argues for going to the hospital at the risk of being arrested. This shows Sean’s growth in being more careful about human life.
They go to the hospital and wait for Yok to recover enough to get out of there. Sean is upset about UNAR and White calms him. He shows that he’s sharing everything with his online news friends. Sean thanks him for helping him. It’s nice to see White get to be White.
Yok wakes and they make a break for it
But UNAR and some other cops stop them. Yok cries as he says that UNAR is going to arrest him finally. UNAR apologizes and says this is for Yok’s good as he handcuffs him. We see in flashbacks that UNAR was threatened by a powerful man.
Gram spits on UNAR, but White continues to sympathize with him internally. He knows not everyone can stand up against the system.
Black flies out of the elevator, taking down the cops. UNAR kicks the last guy before he can shoot. He and Black let everyone go, but Yok tells UNAR he regrets being with him.
They aren’t free yet because cops are downstairs at the entrance. Black leaves to create a diversion and tells Sean to take care of his little brother. There are some fun action scenes as he takes down the cops.
Everyone else takes a side exit, but they are captured by Tawi’s men. They are hooded and stuck in the back of a van, to be driven somewhere and murdered.
Don’t worry, this is a show about hope
Someone took a picture of the van as it left the hospital and it’s in the news. The protestors intercept the van and they get our guys out and free.
Namo and Eugene are there. Yok, thinking about UNAR, asks Namo if art can unlock people. Namo says it helped her heal.
Sean thanks White, but White thinks he should thank himself and the people. There is teasing and flirting and cheek-kissing.
Gram thanks his friend/classmate Nuch for saving them. I wish I’d had the word count to talk about her more, she’s a transgender woman who argues with Gram regularly. She lectures him and tells him that the law is the law, it’s not justice, but she respects what he’s doing. And promises to help him if he’s sued.
Gram has a less interesting reunion with Eugene. Eugene compares the way Black kept giving her away versus how Gram fought for her, and decides to be with Gram. It’s not a bad choice.
Now that that’s all over
White and Sean wait at the abandoned building for Black. White knows his twin won’t join the group again, because he’d be in White’s shadow.
They cuddle cutely and White admits he lied and likes kissing with eyes open. They kiss with eyes open.
Black comes and talks with White. He knows he doesn’t need to protect White and has to find his own way. He couldn’t kill Todd, but sent him to the hospital in a coma. White worries about when he wakes up, but Black thinks things will keep moving and changing regardless.
UNAR shows up at Yok’s student art exhibit to see his nude. He apologizes and tells Yok he quit his job. Yok punches him, and they make up.
Sean and White sit by the river, and Sean talks about being reborn more than once. They race to their posts in the water. White cheats and wins and Sean lands in his arms this time.
White takes his button as a reward, and they make Sean a bracelet. Sean goes for a kiss, then White, then more kissing.
We end with their kissing and some more nice music!
I’m thrilled we have an optimistic ending, it’s what we and our heroes deserve. They aren’t done, there are more battles in their future. I think this ending is better than most shows. I also think it could be stronger.
Namo and Eugene didn’t get enough to do and could have been a bigger part of the rescue. We don’t see who took the picture of the van and got it on the news. What if they were involved? With Nuch? I would have loved to see that.
Eugene and Gram were stuck in a loop of him confessing and her warming up. Her final acceptance felt unexciting.
Black and Todd had the same fight twice. After the first one in episode 9 ends without resolution, Black appears at UNARs in his next scene. Their fight in episode 12 doesn’t involve anything new. Their dueling ideologies, how they want the same thing through different means, is interesting but poorly explored. It’s also a good counterpoint to White and Sean’s ability to work together. They could have done more there.
I liked the end for the twins. White started following the path his parents set for him while Black was on a reactionary, destructive course. In playing his brother, White created a unique path, different from his brother’s. Now Black gets to find a better way for himself.
And I really liked White and Sean’s final scene. I wish they’d left us with more specific plans for future rebellion, but kissing on those posts in the water was perfect.
