Not Me – Episode 3-4 – Recap and Review

When last we left our healthy twin and angry rebel, the twin made shaky progress getting closer to those who could have hurt his brother. But he’s got a long way to go.

Thanks to twin power, he wins the impromptu motorcycle race

Sean claims he went easy on him, but White forces him to say he lost and finger flicks his forehead. Then drives off. I guess he didn’t need to do anything at the garage.

He switches out of his “Black” disguise and goes home. His father wants to drink champagne because he passed the exam. He’s given instructions for the interview now. Encouraging advice like don’t cause problems, and be respectful and humble. Yuck.

Sean hangs with his mural painting friend but is puzzling over Black’s strange behavior. She suggests they talk things out, but Sean feels Black wouldn’t be into talking things over.

Yok also checks with this mural painter about the mural painter they nearly burned alive. He goes by UNAR on social media and is known for his social criticism. Yok suggests to Sean that he might work with them, but Sean is doubtful that someone hiding their identity would want to join them.

At home, Yok is furious to discover his mom was fired from her job because she uses sign language.

White continues to discover the world is unfair

Waiting for his interview, he sees someone he talked to before the exam. This middle-class young man educates White on inequality and opportunities. When he discovers White’s father is an ambassador, he understands why White’s attitude is so confident.

White starts thinking about his privileges as he goes into the interview. One of the interviewers is his Dad’s friend.

Post-interview, he changes into his “Black” disguise and goes to the garage. Sean is in the mood to box. First, he grabs White and finger flicks his forehead, to the surprise of Yok and Gumpa. When the real fight starts, White can’t box and is quickly knocked out. Sean grabs him before he collapses. After that, he soothes him with PPL and tends to his wounds. Is it skinship to knock someone out, catch them, and care for them?

Gumpa pulls White aside to scold him for sucking. He wants White to stay in the garage so he can make him stronger again. White hesitates.

Don’t worry Gumpa, White’s Dad has your back

When a properly dressed White gets home his dad is pissed. During the interview, White said they should handle human rights issues directly instead of lying about things being fine. White passed anyway, but they fight, and White leaves.

At the garage, he takes his frustrations with the system out on a punching bag. He’s angry with himself for not realizing he was a part of the problem.

Yok chases UNAR down, but before he can make friends, UNAR sticks a gun in his face and runs.

Maybe this is more of a BL than I thought

Because White and Sean cohabit and fight over sleeping arrangements, Sean even drags a nearly naked White against him. After he’s asleep, White returns to the business of searching for clues about who hurt his brother. He’s almost discovered, and Sean holds his wrist as they go to sleep.

Sean has nightmares, rolling towards White who tries to comfort and wake him. Yes, this is very BL. They go back to sleep but Sean is snuggly despite the bolster between them. (Bolsters seem to be a thing in Thai BL, though usually they use each other). White tries to pull away but Sean drags him back, only to wake up and ask White why he’s cuddling him.

Their bickering is interrupted by tear gas, which is not a BL trope. They escape the room and discover it was a test by Gumpa. They failed.

As they wash their eyes, Sean comments on how much nicer Black is now. He’s curious because Black is helpful instead of a jerk. He tells White about how Black got him caught and suspended. Sean points out he remembers Black’s words even though “Black” doesn’t. Does Sean have suspicions?

Sean kabadons White against an old car and White blusters a bunch to get away. I’m not sure Sean believes him.

White gets texts from Black’s ex(?) Eugene

According to Gram, they’ve broken up. White finds her and watches her do a performance art piece on social inequality, but runs when she sees him.

Speaking of social inequality, he goes to Todd, who lives in the building his parents gave him. Todd encourages him to talk to Eugene, though White hesitates.

In class, Gram mentions the fire hasn’t led to anything. Sean shows up because it’s a special lecture. He raises his hand to give an example of Impunity, specifically citing Tawi, the guy whose house they burned down.

White is curious about why Sean, normally quiet, brought this up. Gram says Sean hates Tawi’s guts. He’s involved in drugs but so rich he gets away with everything.

Yok has a crush

On social media, he saw that UNAR painted him into his latest mural. He asks Sean if his “girlfriend” ever painted him in a mural. Sean says no, and also she’s not his girlfriend.

At the garage, Sean fairly disparages White’s ability to make a fire. He refuses to explain why he hates Tawi.

They need to decide the focus of their next mission. Everyone has a pet issue except White, who is “keeping his secret” because White doesn’t really have one. He’s getting better at faking it. Gumpa uses a plastic crocodile toy to pick who gets to decide. White gets his finger bit and wants to go with Sean’s issue. Sean thinks he’s trying to get something from him.

Black’s (ex?) girlfriend is waiting at Black’s place. She’s acting clingy but also texting someone else a lot. White gets her drunk to distract her from how he’s not acting like Black and make her pass out. Then he takes out her phone and sees she’s texting someone about meeting with Black.

The next day he follows her when she sneaks out. Her hair is amazing for someone hungover. White watches as she meets up with Gram and gets a side hug.

BL tropes but turned up to 11

The show has great pacing. White is doing better at infiltrating the group, but people are still noticing “Black’s” odd behavior. Especially Sean, which again, comes off as both romantic and dangerous. Meanwhile, his life as White has been disrupted by what he’s learning by acting as Black.

Here’s a question, what creds does Gumpa have that he’s the daddy of the operation? Did I miss his story? He seems to be in charge but not part of the missions. Who made him the boss of everyone?

I didn’t give this show enough credit for how many BL tropes it has, probably because they don’t feel BL-trope-y. There is slow motion and staring, yes, but Sean is so aggressive. It’s not romantic but it’s intimate and intense. It feels a little dangerous. It’s a fun change from the usual.

I don’t think Sean eats any food off White’s face, but if he does, it’s because he threw it at him first.
