James gets Ken to dance with him again

Nour – Episode 9-10 – Recap and Review – End

When we last left our Tired Nour and Eager Investigator, Ken SHOT James in the wrist.

Ken bandages James wrist after HE shot him

Things are… tense

Ken claims he was protecting James, but James knows he wants Chita to kill him so he can return to his true love.

This breaks James, who’s tried everything to keep Ken alive and by his side while Ken is doing everything to die and leave him. So, as long as he’s alive, Ken won’t get to die.

James picks up a gun, and Ken barely stops him from shooting himself. The window takes a hit instead.

Ken, already crying, tells James about having to watch those he loves die. James is the only person he loves left. He breaks down over James trying to get back at him by killing himself.

In the end, everyone leaves him. He should never have loved James.

Ken and Ji talk over what to do now that Ji is Nour

Now Ken is in trouble with the police, and Ji is Not Doing Well

Ji meets with Ken and tells him he needs to get far, far away from his family. As for Chita, Ji was happy with him. Before he knew he’d killed so many people. But he loves Chita, and soon he’ll be a monster like him.

Ji asks Ken if he ever thought staying alive would be the right answer. And he has. James has made him happy. But he knows that happiness will end.

James is at Ken’s place, cutting his hands while fixing the window he broke. Ken isn’t happy. James isn’t Nour and won’t heal the same way. James wonders if he were Nour, would Ken change his mind and keep living?

Ken doesn’t want James to be Nour, he wants him to move forward and live a happy life. But James sees their relationship as like the broken window, and he still wants to put it back together. He knows Ken won’t change his mind, but he wants Ken to understand he can’t let him die without doing anything.

Ken is crying, and there’s kissing and hugging. Ken wants to make every moment count until the end, and James says he’ll never let him go. They are SO dramatic and MY HEART.

Nin and Ji's Mom have a tearful goodbye with him

Ji has told his family he’s leaving for a year on a scholarship

They have to know this is a lie? He’s SOBBING. But they say their goodbyes.

Ken and Ji meet with Chita. The deal is if Chita kills Ken, he gets to see Ji. Points to Chita for not looking excited about killing Ken.

Ken also doesn’t look excited. He even hesitates, crying as he remembers James and his dreams for their future.

James shows up and, as promised, tells Ken to stop. He can tell Ken is scared of dying and leaving him. Ken’s wanted to die for a long time, but James showed him that living like a normal human can bring happiness, and he’s changed his mind. James got him to smile again.

He wants Ken to say he wants to live with him. Ken nods.

James, smiling and happy, orders the other cops to move in. Then he runs to hug Ken.

The cops shoot Chita, but Ji runs in to block them. He’s shot repeatedly, but he and Chita run away.

Chita has his Nour face on as he looks at Ji, hoping he understands him

Chita wants to know if Ji still hates him

Ji doesn’t want Chita to hurt anyone, or for anyone to hurt Chita. But Ji feels like he doesn’t know him. Chita says he’s still his Chita,

He never wanted to be Nour. In the 70s, he asked his Nour lover not to turn him. But when another Nour killed him, his lover turned him anyway. During the fight, a candle was knocked over, and since it was the 70s, everything burned.

Chita woke up naked and alone. He decided to spend the rest of his life killing any Nour he met.

Then he met Ji, the only person who’s ever been kind to him. He asks Ji if he understands him.

Before Ji can answer, James arrives!

He’s now super good at stabbing Nour, getting Ji once and Chita many, many times for killing his father. Then Ji knocks him away, I think much harder than he meant to, because James isn’t getting up.

Ji and Chita share a powerful love confession despite everything

But it’s invincible Chita who Ji goes to

Chita wants to run, but Ji is tired. They’ve suffered enough. He wants Chita to stop.

And despite everything, Ji wants Chita to know that, no matter how many lives they have, he wants to spend them with Chita. He loves him. MY HEART.

Chita didn’t want things to turn out this way and hates himself. The fire of revenge inside him kept burning and growing, until it burned everyone. Ji imagines a place they can be together, and Chita tells him he loves him too, more than anything.

Sobbing! Kissing! And then… Fire! As they die, we see an alternate reality version of them, cute and happy.

Ken, in his Nour face, is looking at two different choices

Ken arrives and has a really hard choice

He can die with Chita and Ji, or try to save James, who is dying.

He. Picks. James. Even though James gives him permission to end his long suffering.

But Ken won’t. He only just started living because of James. Their time together has been a dream he never wants to end. But James wants to use his final breath to tell Ken he loves him.

Then some cops SHOOT Ken, and Phong has to make them stop TWICE. He wants Ken to save James, THEN they’ll arrest him.

Ken can’t turn James Nour, so he frantically stitches his gaping wound closed. To keep him awake, Ken reminds James that they promised to see a rainbow together.

He figured it would be gone by the time they arrived. But that’s okay. He’ll cherish every moment.

James is on the verge of death, his chest cut open

James says he wants to live, but closes his eyes

Ken sobs, saying he wants to live with James a hundred more years. Then his tears fall on James’ injury.

James is suddenly in a strange, dark place. At the same time, we see past Ken. His lover tells him to live on for him, and shoves Ken’s fingers into his chest. Later, Ken sobs over his lover’s glowing, dead(?) body.

James watches as past Ken vows to find a way to be with “him” and then screams, getting Nour face. Then James is glowing, and hears present-day Ken calling for him and sobbing.

Present-day Ken gives James the saddest kiss ever, and James gasps and wakes up. Ken vanishes before getting arrested.

Nin and Rain patiently listen to James tell them life is short

James recovers and goes on with his life, alone

With nothing else to do, he warns Nin and Rain that life is short. If you have something to tell someone, tell them now.

Rain then tells Nin he takes really good pictures of him. Also, he wants a hug. And Nin is his safe space. That’s why he’s been afraid Nin will leave him. Still, he’s decided–

They say they like each other at the same time. Nin has always known how Rain felt about him, but pretended not to know because he was afraid they’d break up.

Rain promises not to leave him no matter what happens, but can he be his boyfriend? They kiss and are the cutest.

James is happy/upset to see Ken again

James nearly jumps off a building

Then he remembers Ken stopping his last suicide attempt. Instead, he leaves Bangkok. On his way, he stops to look at a rainbow. And cry.

But there’s Ken! They both cry over how much they missed each other. Even though people are trying to find him, Ken kept his promise to see the rainbow with James.

Kisssssssssssing! And James gets Ken to dance with him, making Ken LAUGH. My. Heart.

A year later, Nin, Rain, and Ji’s Mom miss Ji terribly, but can still laugh together.

Phong is promoted. Tangme is still missed.

Ken and James are together, hunting rainbows. But James says he’s seen a rainbow up close: Ken in James vision! My heart!

They kiss. Ken thinks that if he could spend an eternity with James, it would feel like the blink of an eye, but he would cherish every moment for as long as he could.

James and Ken smile as they go on yet another rainbow hunt

… I really loved that…

Especially that it didn’t neatly spell everything out or tie everything together. I don’t want a show that tackles BIG questions like this to pretend there are easy answers, when there aren’t.

That said, there are a few things I still wish for:

  1. More about James and his Dad, who must have been Nour? But they never really talked about it.
  2. More about Chita. He mentioned no one ever being kind to him, and I think he also tried to die by suicide once, but we only saw the present-day bullying. I need more.

As far as Ken’s past, I’m okay with what we got. As I interpret it, Ken’s first lover was a previous incarnation of James, since it seems to have been the same actor. Ken was determined to return to him by dying, but this new incarnation of James convinced him to stay with him by living instead.

Yes, as it is, Ken will outlive current James. But I chose to believe they’ll find a way to continue to be together. Ken getting to die, James getting to reincarnate. Something.

And Ji and Chita will reincarnate and find each other.

And Nin and Rain will always be together.

Because a happily ever after is ALWAYS something we have to choose to believe in when a romantic drama ends. There’s no guarantee something terrible won’t happen to our characters later. But what was important was that they loved and were loved.

That belief is at least one of the reasons I watch these shows.
