The Next Prince – Episode 3-4 – Recap and Review

When last we left our kinda prince and his taciturn bodyguard, they finally made it to Emmaly.

Nin doesn’t get Prince-ing

He bows to his butler, struggles with speech formality levels, and greets all the servants. I agree, monarchy is nonsense.

Charan talks with the King about how they were attacked. While the King orders Charan to find Nin’s father, he comes off as more concerned about a potential mole in the palace. He also fires Charan from protecting Nin.

Nin has to learn about Emmalian history on their silly projector technology, and is forced into fancy outfits. Then, he’s brought into the throne room for awkward family time. The King introduces him to his biological Dad. Everyone is fake happy he’s alive except Ramil’s Dad.

The King abandons Nin to his new relatives. The only one smiling is the Prince/Uncle(?) with no heir. I’m sure he’ll be the true villain in the end.

Next is awkward dinner with biological dad and grandpa

Neither shows true interest in him. Afterward, Nin tells the King that he’s not participating in the fencing competition to become the prince. The King acts understanding, but it has to be an act.

Charan learns that Nin’s house in the UK was burned down, and a body was inside. The King doesn’t want to test the body, but wants Charan to tell Nin his Dad’s dead to force him to adapt to Emmaly. Grandpa’s evil.

Nin takes the news as expected. Charan looks like he’s having a feeling as Nin sobs.

Later, Charan says goodbye to Nin because he’s no longer his bodyguard. Nin thinks he’s being distant and wants Charan’s opinion on whether he should compete. He wants Charan’s support no matter what choice he makes. Poor, isolated Nin.

Charan brings himself to kinda rub his shoulder as he cries against him

The king announces the competition will start in 3 months

Nin shows up late and declares he’ll participate. Ava is allowed to participate even though she’s just a woman. Prince Ramil pretends to be excited.

Charan ignores the King’s orders and looks into Nin’s Dad’s death. But he’s being followed. By Nin. And fake kisses him to hide from the paparazzi.

Nin can’t order Charan to remain his bodyguard, so he has grandpa do it. He’s only here to investigate his Dad’s fate and wants Charan’s help.

The rest of the family gives us gossip exposition. No one knows Charan is awesome at fighting, they think Charan is just an Art Professor. But Ramil’s Dad knows the King wouldn’t adopt someone and raise them just to be an Art professor.

The King has a celebration introducing Nin

Charan acts like he’s brooding in a corner, but he’s feeding Nin info through an earpiece.

Ramil and his guy, Paytai, dance with other partners while staring longingly at each other. Nin and Charan do the same, but Nin’s not that kind of guy, and forces Charan to dance with him. Then he stumbles, and we get Kdrama-level staring.

Nin’s butler drags him away, and they try to keep it from becoming anything more. But then Nin pushes Charan to admit he cares about him while accidentally wearing a live mic. This makes Emmaly’s news.

Grandpa brings them both in so he can scold Charan. Charan says it’s only for his job, and Nin backs him up.

Instead of covering it up, they lean into it

Charan does not look thrilled to be posing with Nin for the cameras. Later, Nin orders Charan to stay in the room and wants to confirm they are friends. Charan still handles Nin’s questions by avoiding them.

Charan tells Nin that it’s the Bhuchongpisut family, Ramil’s family, that could be behind that attack that “killed” his father. Nin thinks it’s time to visit them, and does so with dramatic string music.

Ramil and his Dad act friendly. Ramil wants to take Nin to a “secret” place. Charan does not want this and warns Nin about trusting people. Nin says he only trusts Charan.

The special place is… mountain biking in a cave?

Ramil tells Nin his mom was from their family, and gives him a bracelet. I don’t think Nin’s biological Dad has given him anything. Or been in this episode.

Soon after, Nin discovers he’s lost the bracelet. Like kissing, losing a gift is a huge deal in Emmaly. Emmaly is a bit much. They split up to look for it, and Ramil finds it with dramatic string music. Nin knows something is up and rides off to find a cell signal to call Charan. Instead, he falls and gets a flat tire.

Ramils tells Charan what happened, and they look for Nin. Charan finds him and gives him one of the better-looking bridal carries I’ve seen. But Nin makes him put him down when the others find them. Boo.

Furious, Ramil’s father slaps Paytai and forces Ramil to bow and apologize. Later, he whips Paytai.

Alone, Nin reassures Charan that it wasn’t his fault. He also doesn’t want Grandpa to know what they are up to. Charan warns that things cannot be kept from the King.

The King and Charan have a veiled, ideological argument about love while talking about a painting. The King sees folly and tragedy in people of different status falling in love. Charan sees the power of love.

Again, the King wants Charan to stop protecting Nin and puts him in charge of a visiting prince. After Charan leaves, the King reveals he knows Nin ordered Charan not to talk about what happened. He wants a greater distance between the two of them.

I like this tug-of-war between Nin, Charan, and the King

Nin isn’t going up against the King directly, which is wise since he’s the King. Instead, he’s drawing Charan to his side. The King wants to keep them apart, but gives in when Nin requests Charan be his bodyguard.

I’m not sure why the King is allowing this. My guess is he needs Nin, and this is part of manipulating him.

So Charan is in the center. And the hardest one to read. He seems ready to give up on protecting Nin as soon as he’s asked, but also goes against the King to investigate Nin’s father’s death without being asked.

This is a BL, so I know he has feelings for Nin. But how does he feel about the King? I can’t tell if there’s any grandfather-grandson love, or if he feels powerless and just goes along with him. Despite being the King’s adopted grandson, the King believes in status and uses him as a servant. Nin doesn’t care about royalty or status.

And is Nin’s declaration that Charan is the only person he trusts going to turn out to be a mistake?

I hope they keep going with this conflict. I want to see Nin win over Charan. Not just because BL, but because Nin proves worthy of Charan’s trust and love. So far, I’m liking Nin. He seems smart, loyal, comfortable bossing people around, naive at times, but quick to learn from his mistakes. I can see his potential to earn Charan’s trust.

One thing I really, really don’t want is for the King to turn out to be doing this “for their good” and redeem himself. I want him to be evil.
