Pre-Recap Information:

I’ve accidentally watched all of Idol Factory’s productions, starting with Secret Crush On You, then GAP, and now The Sign. I really liked Secret Crush On You and thought GAP was okay — with big extra points for being a full length GL.

But those were a college BL and an office GL, and with The Sign I feel like they’ve branched out into something more ambitious. We’ve got police trainees, serial killers, water dragons, past lives, and a whole mess of other interesting elements. At the same time, they seem reluctant to let go of some of more typical BL humor like in their previous series, so there’s a lot of being drunk.

As I start these recaps I’ve watched 7 of the episodes. The humor doesn’t work for me all the time and the writing is uneven and unbalanced. On the other hand, I’m really enjoying the actors and the characters, which seems to be Idol Factory’s strenth. There’s also some very interesting production as far as camera work and lighting. Despite the uneven writing, I want to see how all these different elements ultimately come together.

Because of how fun the show is, it’s the kind of show that I can watch without worrying too much about where it might go. It would have to go horribly off track for me to not want to see what it’s going to do with these characters. I may not love it — or I might! We’ll see.

There will be no spoilers for future episodes until I reach them in my recaps.

Recaps and Thoughts:

Final Mostly Non-Spoilery Thoughts:

I said most of what I wanted to say here and only have a few details left to add.

For me, the writing was the biggest weakness and it was the weakest when it came to Tharn. It’s not that his actions at any point were fundamentally unbelievable, but I didn’t understand his reasons behind taking them. Not understanding him, I found him frustrating and unlikeable. The fact that I still mostly liked him is entirely thanks to Babe Tanatat Phanviriyakool.

I got the feeling at the end of it that the writer (or whoever dictated the story) was more interested in the police/thriller. The fantasy/past-life-romance stuff felt like they’d just tried to add it in. It needed to be more fundamental.

There’s still a lot to like about this show. Just because it’s not going to be a repeat watch for me doesn’t mean I won’t recommend it to the right potential audience.

And more than the story, the visuals will stick with me for a long time.
