When last we left our doctor-boxer duo, they’d very quickly worked through emotional trauma. In this final episode do we get to see them in different outfits? Oh god, yes we do.
First, it’s fight time and no one can find Yoyak
Because he’s getting a back rub from Wandee. It’s not quite Pit Babe.
Yoyak calls Wandee his boyfriend and gets a forehead flick. Wandee tells him to win the fight and he does. Afterward, Yoyak’s shoulder hurts and he gets personal care from his maybe-boyfriend doctor.
Despite the shoulder, Yoyak accepts a challenge from the reigning champion. In thickly accented English, the ‘American’ once told Yoyak he couldn’t do it. This is Yoyak’s chance to take him down.
Everyone is worried about Yoyak’s shoulder and Yoyak is also still hallucinating a grim-reaper-boxer.
I DIDN’T WANT TO SEE THEM DRESSED AS CLOWNS
But here they are. It’s not kinky, it’s for the children at the hospital. Still. No.
Taem and Dr. Creepy have a meet-cute by a vending machine that makes me uncomfortable. She’s recently been assaulted and he recently assaulted someone. Yuck.
Yei and Cher are also there for the kids and talk about having one of their own, but not in a Pit Babe way.
Time to work on Yoyak’s trauma
As the match approaches Yoyak has more nightmares. He wasn’t there when his mom died because he was boxing and it literally haunts him. Are we only learning this now? Anyway, Wandee soothes him during his nightmares.
In the morning they discuss the afterlife, is that a good morning discussion topic? They also talk about missing each other while Yoyak is training. Aww.
It’s important to Yoyak that Wandee be there for the match, as he’s handling his trauma by relying on Wandee. Kao, his therapist, seems fine with this. Meanwhile, the scholarship plot is still in play and Wandee is involved in an important surgery on the same day as the match. Oh no!
Wandee swears he’ll make it and does PT with Yoyak. Cher takes pictures of them being cute together but honestly, Cher is the cutest.
I think Cher encourages Wandee to have sex and then is carried off by Yei for sex. Their sex lives are too intertwined.
On the day of the match, Yoyak thanks his brother and asks him to give him good luck. It’s sweet.
But will Wandee make it to Yoyak’s match?
He’s working with Dr. Creep, who the show is now selling as A Good Guy Deep Down Inside. No, show, no. The surgery hits some snags but ultimately goes well. Wandee learns afterward that his bonsai-spraying-but-not-evil boss worked on Yoyak’s mother when she passed away. He remembers she loved her sons.
Wandee is running late and his car is dead. He accepts a ride from Dr. Creep. Then they get stuck in traffic and he gets out and runs past the traffic. Then he runs into Taem who gives him a ride on her scooter.
Meanwhile, Yoyak has gone missing again and everyone is worried. We also know that he lied to Kao about no longer seeing the hallucinations. Is he unable to go on without Wandee?
He walks out of the bathroom. Things are fine, he can do it — Wandee or no Wandee! But then, Wandee makes it in time! And they have a chat by the ring while everyone is waiting. Yoyak is crying and wants a kiss and Wandee gives it to him.
But Yoyak still sees the grim-reaper-boxer
While everyone is still waiting, Yoyak admits to Wandee that he lied about the hallucinations being gone. Wandee takes his gloved hand and encourages him.
The ‘American’ goes after Yoyak’s wounded shoulder and Yoyak struggles with his grim vision. During a … time-out? Wandee tells him what his bonsai-spraying-boss said, that his mother loved him.
This gives Yoyak the power to confront the grim-reaper-boxer, who turns out to have his face! Remembering Wandee’s encouragement, he fights back and wins! A mother’s love and older brother’s advice was all it took!
Having won the championship, he gives a long thank you speech. Wandee is brought into the ring and he thanks him for all his support and spins him around the ring.
The show gets preachy
Kao has a new guy who I recognize as a failed suitor from We Are. They discuss their sexual preferences and how it’s okay to be asexual. This is true. It is okay to be asexual.
Wandee and Yoyak have sex, which is better now that they’re in love.
Cher and Yei celebrate Yoyak’s victory and their love with PPL.
We go to the show director’s cafe and get meaning-of-life VO from Wandee.
Wandee is happy Yoyak is part of his family. They sit by the pool, see grey-haired men walk by, and wonder if they’ll be the same when they’re old.
Think we’re done with the speeches? Nope nope.
Because they need to announce who gets the scholarship: It’s Wandee! He gets a crown and a mic. I don’t think this is how that works.
After a long list, Wandee finally thanks Yoyak. Then he sings and asks him to be his ‘real’ boyfriend. I cannot keep track of what Wandee is calling their relationship. But Yoyak kisses him in front of everyone so they’re good.
Yei and Cher have a wedding because they can legally wed thanks to the recent marriage equality bill. After they get married they give a speech. And Yoyak and Wandee kiss first even though it’s not their wedding.
Afterward, Yoyak and Wandee drink wine by the shore. Wandee will be spending several years studying in America and suggests they break up. He’s afraid his love will restrict Yoyak. It’s sweet but this is a done-to-death conflict. Yoyak reassures Wandee he’s the one for him.
They say they love each other. Yoyak calls Wandee vanilla, I think to get him to have sex on the beach. They’re lying down as the show ends so maybe it works.
And that’s it!
I’m not in love with these last two episodes. I appreciate that the show wants to say something important about love and acceptance. And I think it’s touching how they incorporated Thailand’s marriage equality bill into the storyline.
But delivering this message via repeated speeches was weak. These kinds of messages are better shown through character action. For example, I would have loved seeing Kao and his boyfriend navigating their relationship.
In general, the writing was never strong and got worse at the end. Dr. Creep is the worst part. I feel certain the message shouldn’t be “It’s OK to assault someone if you were friends once and also you’re a doctor.” Yoyak’s vendetta with the ‘American’ felt last minute while Wandee’s scholarship popularity contest felt like it went nowhere. Who even cared whether Yoyak and Wandee were calling each other “boyfriends” by the end? They could have done something fun with that screen time. More grandma!
Yoyak and Wandee, their different personalities, their support of each other, and the light tone are the selling points of this show. It’s not hard to imagine Yoyak taking every opportunity to fly to America to see Wandee while he’s gone. Also, guys, video calls are a thing too. They’ll be fine.
