Wandee Goodday- Episode 9-10 – Recap and Review

When last we left our doctor-boxer duo, our boxer finally realized his feelings for the doctor. Since this is Yoyak, it leads to immediate action. But what about Wandee?

I get the flashback I wanted

We see Taem’s classmate being dealt with by the police while Wandee supports her. This is a nice departure from the usual “as long as they aren’t assaulting our main characters it’s fine” drama attitude.

Taem tells Yoyak he’s been checking his phone constantly and likes Wandee. Yoyak realizes he likes Wandee and breaks into a light jog to get to the dance in time. (The guy could learn from Japanese dramas, everyone runs all the time.)

Back where we left off, they get a trophy for being the best at something. Is this a thing? Will it help Wandee get the scholarship? Anyway, the trophy disappears. Yoyak also disappears, stepping away for photos.

This gives Dr Crush, who I will rename Dr Creep, a chance to try and force a kiss on Wandee. Luckily Yoyak shows up to give him a silent punch. This is the second assault Yoyak has stopped today but no cops for Dr Creep. I guess we’re assuming he won’t do this to patients? No, I don’t love this.

Wandee explains to Dr Creep that he and Yoyak started as fake boyfriends, but Yoyak makes him feel good about himself. He doesn’t know why he wasted 8 years on Dr Creep. I don’t care about Dr Creep but I’m glad Yoyak gets to hear this.

Time for new costumes and a new relationship status

Kinda. Kao sends them mermaid outfits but they don’t wear them. Boo.

And Wandee isn’t going to let Yoyak call him boyfriend yet. Wow, he and We Are’s Peem could give lessons on torturing their lovers. They skipped courtship and went straight to sex so now Wandee wants courtship. For now, there will be no sex while Yoyak is a perfect suitor. He makes breakfast, brings flowers, takes Wandee on a trip, and to a fancy restaurant.

Wandee stops it all and says Yoyak’s trying to be like Dr Creep. Which is strange because I think Wandee asked him to do these things? Whatever, Yoyak drags him off to eat insects and Wandee is happy. Not so happy that he’s free with his affection, but Yoyak likes Wandee and this is Wandee.

Back to boxing!

Wandee gets Yoyak to see Kao about his nightmares and hallucinations. Also, his last opponent who won after he stood and did nothing, wants a rematch. Meanwhile, Yei gets beat up by debt collectors and Cher cleans his wounds. Money is still an issue.

Then, the Dad and stepmom show up. Yoyak is fine with them. Yei isn’t. The stepmom actress played sympathetic moms in Moonlight Chicken and My School President, so I’m fine with her too.

The day before the match Yoyak thinks he’s Pit Babe and needs sex before a competition but Wandee is not as generous as Charlie. Wandee lets him cuddle with him instead of the stuffed penis, but still no sex.

The next day at the match Yoyak hits the other guy instead of standing there! Then he hallucinates! And gets punched! But Wandee stands up and cheers him on! Yoyak recovers and wins! Love can overcome boxing hallucinations! He wins so much that his opponent joins their gym!

Afterward, Yoyak initiates a doctor-patient role play which feels weird when that’s also their real relationship. Wandee decides he wants sex more than he wants to stick to the rules. It’s sweet now that there’s kissing.

We finally get to the money problems

Yoyak sees Yei hiding a notice about property seizure and the two fight. Yoyak goes to Wandee’s to get a hug and cry. Wandee cheers him up, forces him to eat, and talks about the problem. Yoyak wants to take on a stronger opponent and win the gym more money, but Yei doesn’t like this idea.

Wandee and Cher gossip about the brothers on the phone and it’s adorable. Later, Wandee learns that Yoyak wanted to become a boxer mostly because of Yei. So they fight because they love each other so much.

The gym gets an opportunity to make money in a big match but Yei won’t let Yoyak take the fight. Then Yoyak gets a call, their father is in the hospital with cancer.

Yei is making things difficult for everyone

When their mom died, their Dad left Yei with all the responsibilities. Yei thinks their father forgot about their mom. He doesn’t want to see their dad even if he’s sick. Yoyak doesn’t want them to miss their chance to say goodbye like they did with their mom.

Dad isn’t dying yet. He meets Wandee and feels bad that he and Cher are with his sons. Yei and Yoyak start fighting in the hospital room so their father yells at them to stop.

Then he takes them home and makes them fight. With gloves. Yoyak gets Yei to admit the debt is from helping Yoyak become a champion. But it’s because of a promise to their mom. Yei cries as Yoyak asks if he can help take some of the burden. Aww. Brother hug!

Yei isn’t done being difficult

Their stepmom made all their favorite dishes but Yei won’t eat any. He’s certain their father and stepmom will forget the memorial for their mother tomorrow.

But the next day as they prep, Dad pulls his sons away. He tells them he never forgot their mom but was a mess after she died. At the same time, the stepmom tells Cher and Wandee that the father was a mess when they met. She’s not sure why she stuck with him. Dad apologizes to Yei for leaving him with everything and says their mom would be proud. Father-son hug!

Now the family is all better. They support each other at the memorial. The stepmom gives Yei collateral to help secure a loan and tells him she never wanted to replace their mother. Yei asks her for leftovers to show he’s done being a jerk.

We end it at karaoke, and the father insists Cher and Wandee join for pictures.

Let’s do all the emotional healing at once!

Wandee is sad because he can’t remember if his parents ever said they loved him. They were never around and he was raised by his grandmother even before they died.

Yoyak brings this up with Grandma and immediately they have the solution. Grandma has a video of baby Wandee with his parents. Wandee sees that they loved him.

Walking home, Wandee is annoyed that Yoyak has his grandma’s number. But he’s happy they had such a good day. Yoyak wants them all to be good days. Wandee remembers that he wants days to be special.

He and Yoyak kiss, and the kiss powers the lights of the little park, turning them on.

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were this easy?

But this is that kind of show. We aren’t going to linger on anything too sad or hard, so we get quick resolutions. Whiplash inducing emotional resolutions. Except with Yoyak’s boxing hallucinations and Wandee’s scholarship.

I wonder if Yei will stop meeting secretly with debt collectors now? Will the debt collectors come up at all? Does Cher know that’s what was happening? What about Wandee’s issues crossing the street, will he get therapy too?

As for answered questions, I wondered about Yoyak’s relationship with his Dad. It makes sense that he’s the same open, loving person with them as with Wandee. It makes for such a nice contrast with Wandee’s shy reserve. It’s this pairing that makes the show fun to watch despite the weaknesses of the production.  Sometimes it’s nice to watch a couple be together and easily overcome obstacles, and this show does that well.

It is funny how Wandee is like “I will always be by your side but don’t call me boyfriend” though.
