Welcome to my weekly blog post where I give thoughts on dramas I’m watching but not recapping.
I’ve reached episode 6 and the halfway point of my recaps of Oh No! Here Comes Trouble! So. There’s that.
Meanwhile, I’m still watching a dozen other airing shows. Here are two more of them:
Wedding Plan – ผนการ(รัก)ร้ายของนายเจ้าบ่าว – 2023 (Pictured)
A currently airing Thai BL, I’m at 4 out of 7 episodes.
A wedding planner is attracted to a groom-to-be, even worse, the groom returns his interest.
This drama shares a lot of DNA with Love In The Air including the author of the original novel, the director, and cameo’s from those characters. If you liked that one, you should give this one a try.
The setup is different, thankfully we’ve left college behind and our leads are working adults, albeit baby-faced ones in their early 20s. And don’t worry about cheating, from the beginning the audience gets let in on the fact that the marriage is all for show. Our married-couple-to-be is only doing it to satisfy horrible demanding parents. The groom-to-be is gay and the bride-to-be is in a committed relationship with her girlfriend. The poor wedding planner though, remains in the dark about this important fact.
Our two leads have good chemistry, with both of them pulling off a sweet yearning that tugs at the heartstrings. It has the feel of a conflict that could be solved with a single conversation, but that’s at part the fault of the overall light tone of the show. The mothers are dealt with in a comedic way that makes them feel more harmless than the reality of mothers who’ve driven their children into a sham marriage would imply.
But I like the light tone, which keeps the show fun and entertaining and the angst at a gentle tug. The groom-to-be has fun teasing the wedding planner, and except for the nagging issue of his impending marriage, he’s thoughtful and sweet with him too. The wedding planner is adorably flustered and annoyed and attracted all at once. There’s not much to say about the plot, because there isn’t much of one.
As long as you don’t take any of it too seriously, it’s good fun.
My Lovely Liar – 소용없어 거짓말 – 2023
A currently airing Korean Supernatural Mystery Comedy Romance, I’m at 4 out of 16 episodes.
A woman who can tell when anyone lies, and everyone lies, meets a man who doesn’t seem to sell a single one.
I’m a sucker for a sweet guy and a hard-edged gal and this show is serving that up.
Our male lead has been traumatized by a dark past that has only been hinted at so far. He’s withdrawn from the world out of a need for self-protection, hiding in his home as much as possible and wearing a mask when he goes outside. He’s very sensitive and conflict-avoidant. Despite this he’s pursuing a musical career, but his increasing popularity is making it harder and harder to hide.
Our female lead has also been traumatized by her past, growing up with the ability to sense literally every lie. Her response is nearly the opposite of his, creating a hard shell around herself. She’s tough and righteous and confident and doesn’t shy from conflict. She’s also possibly wrong about the true nature of her abilities, and I’m curious to see where this takes her. I’m hoping the drama doesn’t knock her down too hard but makes this a chance for her to grow stronger.
Due to trouble at his own home, our male lead moves in next door to the female lead and drama-conflicts lead to their continued meetings. The drama has only hit the quarter mark, and so far the leads have been sweetly protective of one another but also keeping their distance. There are a lot of secrets between them that are going to have to come out and hopefully soon.
I’m looking forward to seeing their pasts take center stage and hoping it becomes a catalyst for them to become closer.
