Khom Khlang – Episode 1-2 – Recap and Review

Peem interrupts Master Bulan’s ritual, demanding that she talk to her Right Now. It’s not a good start.

But Peem has been having a hard time

One day earlier, Peem was on a stakeout with her younger brother Phu, another cop. Phu worries about his energy-drink-chugging, not-sleeping sister. She’s been this way since their sister Pat died.

Phu suggests they visit Pat next week. They both have gifts for her.

Their target, Krating, arrives and Peem bolts after him without waiting for orders. She catches him beating some cops unconscious and shoots him in the shoulder. Yet, there’s no blood, and he escapes.

Peem chases him down again and fights him. He taunts her about her sister.

Phu catches up and shoots at Krating, but his gun jams. Krating starts beating him, so Peem shoots at him again. But Krating chants, and the bullet hits him and falls to the ground.

Stunned, Peem watches him shoot her brother with the gun that jammed just a moment ago. Somehow, Phu makes it to the hospital, where Peem sobs in her parents’ arms.

Back to the present, Bulan is not stopping her ritual for Peem

So Peem has to wait until dark to talk to her. She wants bullets that’ll take down a criminal with impenetrable skin who practices black magic, like Bulan.

Bulan does NOT practice black magic, and she’s not making magic bullets.

Peem gets rude, suggesting it’s a lie that Bulan’s father was benevolent, and Bulan must be running a scam.

This doesn’t win Bulan over. She wonders if Peem wants justice or help killing someone. Peem says justice, so how can she get help? Bulan asks her to spend the night in the sanctum, but Peem refuses.

Bulan warns that she won’t sleep well.

In a flashback, Peem’s father tells her that he also encountered a criminal with an Invulnerability Yantra tattoo that made them impervious to blades or bullets. Bulan’s father helped them back then, crafting bullets that could take the guy down.

Bulan’s father is gone, but Bulan has the same skills.

At Bulan’s home, her Kuman Thong asks about Peem. Bulan explains that her father told her she’d cross paths with her.

As promised, dark spirits come for Peem in the night

But a necklace she has seems to protect her. She returns to Bulan’s and asks if she can get those bullets if she spends the night. Bulan suggests she survive the night first.

The spirits come for Peem again. But this time, Bulan confronts them, performing a ritual and destroying them with fire.

The next morning, Peem accidentally nearly turn-kisses Bulan and staaaaaaaaaring.

Bullets are all Peem can think about, but Bulan makes her give alms. She instructs Peem to make a water offering to dedicate her merits to those trapped in karmic bond. It will ease “her” suffering.

During merit-making, Bulan does some staaaaaaaaaaaring.

When Peem makes the water offering, we see a ghostly hand. Afterward, Peem asks if Bulan meant her sister Pat, and if she’s okay. Because she’s never seen, felt, or dreamed of Pat since she died. That’s heartbreaking.

Pat was trafficked, and then died by suicide in front of Peem. Since then, Peem can’t sleep because she’s afraid she’ll lose her loved ones again. That’s extra heartbreaking.

Bulan says Pat isn’t filled with joy, but not troubled like she was in life. What Peem is doing is only putting herself in danger. She needs to think of herself, or her late sister, finding happiness.

Peem is done talking about ghosts

She wants to get the men who are hurting people. To do that, she needs those bullets. She leaves and calls her cop father to ask to be transferred to Phop Phra. Then she glares at Bulan before leaving. Bulan is maybe amused.

Bulan remembers her father telling her about her karmic soulmate, who matches Peem both physically and in personality. So, found her!

Peem joins the local station, there to hunt those human traffickers. She’s settling into her new desk when Bulan arrives, looking Super Cool in sunglasses. They share a look as Bulan walks into Peem’s new boss’s office.

Bullets? Peem follows Bulan to ask again. Nope, no bullets. Bulan brought lunch! Since Peem left without eating breakfast.

Peem’s brother is dying, so she does NOT need lunch. This is untrue, and the bullets won’t help her brother now, but okay. Bulan is also annoyed. She IS helping Peem by protecting her from the malicious spirits chasing her. And she calls Peem someone she yearns for deeply.

Peem takes a bite of the food, and I think it’s good. But Peem won’t admit that or eat more. She claims she only eats dinner.

Later, Peem’s new co-worker Sarge takes her on patrol

They stop at a restaurant where Peem finally eats. The owner gives her some special dishes, but she gives them to Sarge. He passes them under his leg in an odd, superstitious ritual to ward off evil.

Peem thinks about that bite of Bulan’s food she ate. She didn’t do anything to ward off evil.

And she doesn’t get to finish eating, because nearby, a schoolgirl has become possessed!

Bulan arrives first, facing a student in garish makeup who speaks with a demonic echo. The demon voice threatens to tear the student to pieces. Earlier, the student broke a Thai dancer figurine and released something.

By the time Peem arrives, Bulan is mid-ritual. Peem decides it’s assault and interrupts AGAIN.

The student shrieks, and so does her mother, begging Bulan to help because this is NOT her daughter. Peem challenges the ghost to take it out on her, not the child. Bulan sees the ghost, which looks like the figurine, lurking in the corner.

Peem has her necklace put on the student. It immediately calms her down.

As soon as they take the student away, Bulan slaps Peem hard

Even if Peem doesn’t believe, she shouldn’t disrespect Bulan’s rituals. And if afflictions go after Peem, she won’t be able to help her. Peem, who keeps demanding magic bullets, wants Bulan to prove ghosts are real.

That night, Peem’s working on the case when the ghost appears where she’s staying. Her gun isn’t any help, and the ghost somehow turns one Peem into two. One of her remains behind while another version appears outside, dressed like the figurine.

The ghost demands she die and starts dancing. The Original Peem also starts doing a strange, contorted dance. Outside Peem watches the ghost and cries, promising they will never be severed.

Then, a hand comes out and covers Outside Peem’s eyes. It’s Bulan! She tells the ghost to leave. Any ghost that dares to touch Peem, she’ll burn to dust. Then, she does a ritual that does just that.

Back with the real Peem, Bulan pets her and banishes the spirits

Later, she tells Peem not to do that again. She’ll be afflicted if she plays hero that way.

Peem remembers the ghost’s pain and sorrow, and asks if it will wait forever for its love. Bulan says it will, enduring the suffering so it can eventually experience joy, if only for a short time.

Peem thinks Bulan understands the ghost well. She apologizes, and Bulan wants her to know this is all for her sake. Peem wonders why Bulan protects her and other people.

Bulan is waiting for her karmic soulmate. Peem has questions, but Bulan kisses her. It’s kinda stiff, but then there’s staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaring.

Bulan calls Peem her dearest, asking her to stay with her. That’s… a lot. Peem is good for a more passionate kiss, though. She pulls away and apologizes, but then… Bulan wants more kissing.

Later, Peem wakes up, fully clothed and confused. She looks up love spells online and worries about the food she ate. It doesn’t help that Bulan has breakfast ready.

Peem turns it down. Bulan then tries to hand-feed it to her, and Peem…

Tune in next episode to find out if Peem eats the food!

Poor Peem. She’s SO self-destructive that she’s attracting ghosts. But she’s also seen both her siblings get shot. Add no sleep and poor eating, and there’s no way she’s thinking clearly.

Given that, I get why she’s behaving the way she’s behaving, insulting the person she’s asking things from and demanding magic bullets while sneering at ghosts. She’s that desperate. She might not even believe in magic bullets, but after what she saw, what else can she do?

But what about that necklace? Has Peem encountered the supernatural in the past, or is it connected to her sister Pat?

Bulan isn’t making things easy either. She’s so distant and otherworldly, never explaining things clearly. I can believe she regularly interacts with the spiritual realm. But it makes her hard to understand in the human realm.

Also, the dancing ghost was great. I loved the way it made Peem contort and dance. Outside of the romance, this is what I’m looking forward to most: strange, creepy, supernatural things. And I guess Peem eating delicious-looking food.
