A Lie and Lin Zai look at each other over a boat motor

The Last Oath – Episode 7-8 – Recap and Review

When we last left our Immune Target and His Hunter, Lin Zai insisted they help Some Guy they accidentally shot.

shady Mom babbles about her troubles to Lin Zai

Some Guy and his Mom both seem shady

Mom wails a lot about their troubles as she bandages up her son. Lin Zai can’t stop Lin Zai-ing, taking full responsibility and promising to help get them food.

They settle in for the night. Lin Zai and I are both surprised when A Lie agrees to stick around for a few days. But earlier he spotted a boat nearby and wants to see if they can use it to travel faster.

He tells Lin Zai to sleep, and he’ll keep watch. So he catches Mom creepily checking on them.

The next day they check the boat. It’s got no gas and a wiring issue, but Lin Zai thinks it’s fixable with the right supplies. They scavenge for supplies, and Lin Zai finds a map showing he can easily get back to his camp by boat too. He Does Not Share This Info With A Lie (nor should he).

Lin Zai and A Lie are offered weed soup by shady Mom

Back at the camp, Mom has Weedy Soup for them!

A Lie passes on that for both of them. He wants to split the food they found, but Mom wails until Lin Zai gives her all of it.

So A Lie needs to hunt, but he doesn’t want to leave Lin Zai alone. Lin Zai is annoyed. He’s not A Lie’s prisoner, and he’s even helping him. If A Lie wants to save time, they should split up.

A Lie leaves, and we see Mom creepily watching!

When A Lie gets back to the camp, Lin Zai isn’t there, and he panics. But as he leaves to find him, Lin Zai returns. While they prepare for dinner, they secretly give each other suspicious, uneasy looks.

Over dinner, Lin Zai does not want to sit near A Lie. Or accept his chicken.

A Lie is in a strange, foggy nightmare

That night, A Lie has a nightmare

He’s trapped in fog, trying to reach a Lin Zai whose back is always to him. When he finally reaches him, he vanishes.

He wakes up with a start, and Lin Zai is still sleeping right next to him.

The next day, Lin Zai gives A Lie the silent treatment as they part. When Lin Zai returns to camp alone, Mom insists on stitching up a hole in Lin Zai’s jacket. She babbles about how worried she’d be if Lin Zai were her son. He needs to take care of himself.

This concern from a stranger doesn’t help Lin Zai’s attitude towards A Lie. When A Lie says they have to leave right away, Lin Zai bitterly asks if there’s anything on his mind besides his mission. A Lie claims there is, and it’d be best for everyone if he gets there ASAP.

Lin Zai figures if he weren’t Immune, A Lie would let him die. A Lie can’t really argue, which sucks for Lin Zai.

Later, Lin Zai finally gets the boat working. Then, he deliberately puts the fruit he’s allergic to into the food Mom is making.

shady Mom and A Lie finds Lin Zai collapsed

Later, she finds him unconscious on the ground and calls for help

A Lie discovers they don’t have the right medicine, so he leaves for the nearest town, nearly 5 kilometers away. Before he goes, he threatens Mom with what he’ll do if she hurts Lin Zai.

But Lin Zai is faking it so he can escape. He gets up, and Mom tries to stop him, claiming to be afraid of what A Lie. Lin Zai promises A Lie doesn’t kill innocents. He pushes her aside, but a Huge Guy at the gate knocks him out.

When he wakes, he’s tied up in a cannibal kitchen full of human bones. The Huge Guy sharpens knives while Mom prays.

Lin Zai tries to quietly break free as they discuss the ways to cut him up for meat. Then, Mom sends the Huge Guy to attack A Lie when he returns.

His hands still tied, Lin Zai makes a run for it, but the Huge Guy catches him and strangles him. But A Lie is back! And he stabs the big guy in the gut. They fight, and Lin Zai stops Some Guy from joining the fight.

Mom goes after Lin Zai with a knife, so A Lie throws a knife into her chest. Then he strangles Huge Guy as he crawls towards his mom. Lin Zai hasn’t killed Some Guy, so A Lie does it for him.

A Lie unties Lin Zai and then PATS HIS BACK while he throws up, before getting the two of them out of there.

But uh oh, Huge Guy’s fingers twitch. He’s alive!

the Huge Guy has been defeated, or HAS HE?

Well, A Lie has stopped actively threatening to hurt Lin Zai

After the previous two episodes, I wondered if A Lie could really hurt Lin Zai. At this point, threats or no, I don’t think he could do it. And I think Lin Zai knows it. He’s hurt and angry with A Lie, NOT scared of him.

And A Lie’s reaction to Lin Zai’s cold treatment is not that of an impatient, violent kidnapper with a non-compliant victim. He seems like someone who wants to fix things between them but doesn’t know how.

Because the problem is he’s KIDNAPPED him and expects him to fix a boat so the kidnapping can go FASTER. A Lie, there’s no fixing that, you need to Not Do It.

He’s also still more worried about Lin Zai getting away than anything else. When Lin Zai wasn’t at camp, he left his weapons behind to go out and find him. On one hand, this shows he wasn’t going to hurt him. On the other hand, he wasn’t worried Lin Zai was in danger.

But I give him points for rubbing Lin Zai’s back when he threw up. Good instincts. It’s so funny and sweet amidst the chaos.

I’m curious what it’ll take for A Lie to give up his mission. I don’t think it’s happening anytime soon. But maybe this cannibal encounter will change things. Sometimes cannibals are needed to move the relationship along.
