Love upon a Time – Episode 5-6 – Recap and Review

When last we left our reluctant time traveler and the stern-faced guard, Nakun resolved to let go of his feelings for Phop.

So he’s spying on Phop and Varna in the garden

Phop is not fooled by him meowing behind a bush.

Later, Phop’s Dad advises Nakun to get married quickly, before entering the Royal Service. Also, he needs to study. Nakun doesn’t want to study, but Phop offers to help.

Now, Nakun wonders why Phop would be okay with ‘Klao’ getting married. Bromance? Hasn’t realized his feelings? Bisexual? Closeted?

Phop comes in, steals Nakun’s notes, and when Nakun tries to get them back, we get staaaaaaring.

Instead of studying, Nakun somehow gets them on a boat. But he can’t row, so Phop needs to put his arms around him to show him how. This is too much for Nakun, and they wrestle over the oar until Phop falls in!

When he doesn’t come up, Nakun dives in. He can’t find him and panics, but when he comes up, Phop is waiting on the dock.

Wet cuddling time! Phop is thrilled that Nakun worries about him, too. I bet these poor guys are freezing.

So maybe Nakun will embrace his feelings

It doesn’t hurt that shirtless Phop and Jom are sparring the next day. Nakun watches Kaew and Jom, remembering how the dynamics were reversed in his time.

Kaew is scandalized when Nakun suggests he has romantic feelings for Jom. Then he’s scandalized when Nakun asks if Phop is into men. Rumor is Phop’s impotent.

Phop interrupts this chat with his sword, wanting Nakun to show his skills. But the blade causes Nakun to see Klao getting stabbed in the stomach. Nakun reacts like he’s been stabbed, though he recovers quickly.

Jom scolds Kaew for laughing with Nakun instead of working on becoming More Man. After Kaew leaves, Phop scolds Jom for concealing his feelings and warns that he can lose the person he loves in an instant, like Phop nearly did.

Nakun guesses his mission is to find out who killed Klao

Meanwhile, Phop isn’t interested in Varna’s potpourri skills. Varna is taking the hint, but Phop’s Mother reassures her that Phop is just… busy? This is Phop’s mom’s first bad take.

Nakun is interested in learning to make potpourri. But it’s an excuse to make up nonsense about needing to get the flowers Phop likes and sneak off to the market.

Phop’s servant volunteers the name of the brothel Klao liked to visit. Nakun doesn’t want to go there, but he doesn’t have any other leads. Once he arrives, he’s dragged inside, where he’s left to wait for “Pim”. He wishes Phop would save him.

At the same time, poor Phop, who was eagerly anticipating Nakun’s potpourri, discovers he’s missing.

Nakun mistakes the next woman he sees for Pim and admits to the real Pim that he’s lost his memories. She reaches for his shirt buttons, which he’s not into, but then side-hugs him and cries because he really has forgotten her.

I guess it was a test, because she and Klao never had sex. He just talked to her. She’s about to tell him about how they first met, when Cherd shows up to create trouble. Pim is HIS.

Nakun is ready to protect Pim, and Cherd is ready to attack him with a broken bottle.

It’s not Phop, but Harn, who saves Nakun

Again.

Nakun goes home in the pouring rain to a soaking wet Phop waiting for him at the dock. Nakun immediately apologizes. Phop says he’s glad he’s safe, but won’t talk to him. Nakun would feel less guilty if he insulted him.

The next day, Phop is sick and won’t see Nakun, who waits for him for hours.

Seeing this, the servants share useful exposition on how close Klao and Phop once were. Then they started fighting all the time, and one day Klao left. After that, Klao’s drinking got worse, and so did Phop’s worrying. They still weren’t talking when Klao went missing.

Phop overhears them and remembers warning Jom about losing someone you love.

Meanwhile, Jom is topless again

Jom scolds him for bringing food, then eats it. Kaew is upset because Jom used to protect him when people gossiped about him for being feminine. Why does he hurt him now?

Jom claims he sees him as a younger brother. But he doesn’t treat Klao this way, so Kaew wants Jom to be honest about his feelings.

Suddenly, Jom says Kaew’s his only companion. His scolding is to prepare him to deal with cruelty from other people. Kaew feels Jom is his only companion, too, and leans his head on his arm. Their faces get close, it looks like it’ll be a forehead kiss but–

They’re interrupted. Jom pushes him away, tells him to leave, and never do anything like that ever again. A stunned Kaew cries.

Now Nakun is sick, and babbling in his sleep

Phop takes his hand and promises never to get angry and keep his distance that way again. Time for a tender BL wipedown. Nakun whimpers that he wants to go home. Phop promises he’ll be his home.

In another flashback, we see Klao vowing revenge on everyone who bore false witness against his father. Sometime later, Phop and Klao argued over whether a commoner like Cherd could be involved in his Father’s death. Klao knocks Phop into a table full of Klao’s notes.

Phop is STILL sick. So Nakun takes care of him. And apologize for making him worry. Nakun now understands his concern and promises to tell him before going anywhere. Their faces get close, Nakun looks down shyly, and gets a surprise kiss on the forehead.

Later, Nakun finds Klao’s notes from the flashback-dream. Unfortunately, like Nakun, Klao writes in foreign languages so others can’t read them. A week later, Nakun has only deciphered “2 am”.

Songkran time!

An unhappy Kaew updates Nakun on his relationship woes. Nakun encourages him to love himself. One day, Jom will fall for him, and if he doesn’t, forget him. Kaew will eventually find the love he deserves.

In the background, Phop holds a chicken.

Later, Nakun finds the Oracle and tells her she was right, Klao was murdered. If he finds the murderer, will he get to go home?

The Oracle hands him a rock, and things get wild. She babbles about fulfilling a promise, restoring what was lost, and setting wrongs right. Then she snaps back into herself.

The rock is a star shard from the heavens. If he prays with all his heart, his prayers will be answered. Before Nakun can get a clearer answer, she’s kicked out again.

Later, Kaew asks Nakun about his relationship with the Oracle. Nakun doesn’t like how she’s treated. People gossip about others just because they are different, not realizing how painful it is.

If Jom cared less about what people thought, things would be easier. He gives Kaew the star shard. Kaew doesn’t want to pray to a rock, but Nakun thinks it doesn’t hurt to try.

Songkran in this era doesn’t involve spraying water everywhere

Nakun doesn’t let that stop him, using a bamboo water gun. Everyone gets involved, including the OST.

Well, not Jom and Kaew. Jom nearly caresses Kaew’s face, only to get self-conscious when he notices people watching. He leaves, Kaew follows, and Jom scolds Kaew for HIS behavior.

Kaew doesn’t care what others think. Would Jom treat him differently if there were no other people in the world? Jom lamely repeats that he only sees him as a brother, nothing else.

Kaew is done. He curses him. In the next life, he hopes Jom falls for him, and he won’t look at him even once.

Phop gently wipes water off Nakun’s face. He wants to visit Phichit, where Nakun learned all these strange things.

Cherd’s goons report to Cherd that Nakun is behaving differently and has amnesia. This info comes from someone in Phop’s household!

The Tea Shop Owner also learns about the amnesia, but doesn’t believe it. He thinks something happened to Klao, and Nakun is his twin, here to find the truth. Basically, Not Me

Harn, sitting nearby, overhears.

Later, Nakun and Phop reluctantly part for bed. But despite wishing for no dreams, Nakun flashes back to Cherd stabbing him in the gut. He wakes and rushes from his room into Phop’s arms. He can’t tell him that Klao died.

Phop is okay waiting to hear about his nightmares. Then he suggests that Nakun share his bed that night.

I don’t like Harn

Mainly because he keeps saving Nakun instead of Phop. Since his saves always happen when Cherd is involved, there’s something fishy going on.

Kaew crying is The Worst Thing In The World. I love him. Jom better do a 180 and grovel and worship him. Although I suspect their trajectory is/was tragic, considering Thee and Pun, but Nakun being there hopefully changes things.

The forehead kisses are kind of a tease, and the romance is moving slowly, but it’s working for me. I like slow. But, I’m with Nakun, what is Phop thinking? He’s not pushing back about Varna, but is aware of his deep feelings for Klao. Phop, what’s your plan?

Phop’s comment about visiting Phichit makes me wonder if he goes to the future later, since Phichit = the future. Is the future Phop we saw for just a moment the real Phop?

That’s only a guess, and I have to wait anxiously for 6 episodes to see how it all works out.
