Love upon a Time – Episode 9-10 – Recap and Review

When last we left our reluctant time traveler and the stern-faced guard, Nakun accepted Phop’s love.

In a Sexy Way

Now Phop won’t let Nakun escape his tiny bed. He puts that ring on Nakun’s finger (that didn’t take long), promising to replace it with something more precious on their wedding day.

The parents are leaving, yay! Except Phop’s Mom wants the Evil Ladies to keep an eye on EVERYTHING. Also, I’ve realized the Evil Ladies are Phop’s Dad’s other wives/concubines.

Our guys make little effort to hide their relationship. Chauy, Sai, and Phop’s servant seem happy for them, but other people… Not so much.

During some post-sex cuddling, Nakun mentions his suspicion that the Evil Ladies are helping Cherd follow him.

He’s not wrong! One of them tells Cherd’s henchmen that Klao’s memories might be returning.

Phop tells Harn he thinks someone in the department is involved

Harn is Deeply Concerned and wants Phop to share this with No One Else.

Kaew brights Nakun food instead of Jom. Except here’s Jom, who eats the food. He also, thankfully, asks for forgiveness. If Kaew moves away, he could no longer bear this life.

He begs him for another chance, promising to cherish him and atone. But when Kaew asks what he would be to Jom, Jom has no answer. Kaew only promises to have servants deliver food.

Nakun and Phop sympathetically watch as Jom repeatedly asks Kaew to forgive him. Seeing that mess, Nakun thanks Phop for facing his own heart and keeping him by his side.

Phop promises to be by his side now and forevermore. MY HEART.

Now that he knows he’s Klao, Nakun is becoming more Klao-ish

Later, he sees a shirtless Phop and wonders if he can solve Klao’s mysteries without leaving Phop behind.

Varna visits, but Nakun is the only one there. Nakun does a quick lesson in self-determination and freedom. He explains to Varna that she’s not just someone’s daughter or someone’s wife, and can pursue what interests her.

After Varna leaves, the Evil Ladies tell him a “friend” of his with an injured arm took their children. Nakun easily finds them with Cherd. Cherd’s injury seems to point to him being at the raid, even though one of Phop’s subordinates claimed he was at the tavern.

Nakun accuses Cherd of luring him there to kill him, since his previous attempt failed. Now Cherd knows his memories are back. Phop gets between them, then catches a nod between Cherd and one of the Evil Ladies.

When Phop’s Father is upset over what happened while they were gone and is ready to kick Nakun out, Phop reveals the Evil Ladies are working with Cherd. But then the Evil Ladies push Phop to reveal his love for Nakun.

So, Phop’s Father is still upset and ready to kick Nakun out. Phop cries on his mother’s lap, aww. She doesn’t think his father will ever understand. And even though Nakun is like her own child, she can’t accept it either.

Later, Phop reassures Nakun that his love will never fade

Nakun doesn’t want to let Phop’s parents down, but he doesn’t want to give up their love either.

Phop swears that if Nakun is kicked out, he’ll go with him. He will not let anything tear them apart. My. Heart.

Thankfully, Phop’s Father puts off Phop marrying Varna. Thanks to Nakun, she’s newly empowered, happy to have free will and value outside of her roles as a woman. Her Uncle thinks this is nonsense.

Nakun blames himself for Phop’s parents’ unhappiness. But Phop reminds him that, like Varna, Phop always did what he was told, and his father never sought his consent.

Time for more romantic Cherd talk. Phop can’t believe his trusted subordinate lied about Cherd. But he did, because we see the guy passing Cherd a note. It says to execute the plan at once!

Nakun asks Phop about Klao’s father again, leading to another long flashback. The important thing is, Klao witnessed someone trying to bribe his Dad. He didn’t see their face, but the sword they carried.

Breakfast with Phop’s mother is awkward, but Nakun gets Phop to eat

Phop’s Dad wants to talk to Nakun. Also, he’s carrying a sword!

Phop’s Father has secured a position for Nakun somewhere else, and he’s to leave tomorrow. He’s worried about something far worse than true love being destroyed. He’s worried about CRUEL GOSSIP.

Nakun wants to protect Phop and not be forced from his side. Phop comes in and says if Nakun leaves, he leaves. He’s always done what his Dad wants, but he wants to follow his heart for once. If his life is ruined, let it be for his choices, not his father’s. Yes. Agreed.

Phop’s Father says Phop can live his own life. He won’t concern himself with him anymore.

Phop gives Nakun a big hug.

Meanwhile, Kaew helps Jom deal with a horrible child patient

Jom hopes he’s forgiven, but nope. Kaew is only there to take him to Phop’s, to stand awkwardly while Nakun updates them on what’s going on.

Nakun also tells them about investigating the opium smuggling. Jom gets more apology practice, this time for misjudging Nakun. But Nakun also apologizes for keeping it secret. Fair

And, can they distract everyone while he searches the manor? He recognized Phop’s Dad’s sword. But what he wants to find is the letter with the fake seal used to frame his father.

Instead, he finds a letter from Klao’s Dad warning Phop’s Dad to stay away from the capital.

Then, Phop’s Dad appears with the fake seal letter. He gives Nakun both letters for handwriting comparison. Nakun starts to say something about the swords, but asks for forgiveness instead.

If Nakun is going to be punished, Phop wants to be punished as well.

Phop’s Father is not going to punish them. He’s still not into BL, but sees Klao as a son and feels guilty for not helping Klao’s father as promised.

The handwriting matches. But there are weird, suspicious ink blots on the fake seal letter.

Plus, Nakun realized that all the officials of a certain rank carry the same sword. At least this limits their suspect list.

Later, while Phop and Nakun are being sweet and silly, Phop’s mom overhears outside. She smiles tearfully.

Pim avoids Nakun, so they track down some guy who might be involved with the ships bringing the opium. They find him. He’s useless.

Jom gets his chance to redeem himself!

He helps Kaew pick out a more “feminine” item at the market. When people gossip, not only does he take Kaew’s hand, but he dares them to find a better spouse than Kaew.

Kaew is appreciative, but Jom never asked him to be his spouse. So Jom asks him to be his spouse.

Jom says that while Kaew was gone, he felt as if half his soul was missing. It was far worse than any slander he could endure. He apologizes for not realizing sooner, and asks Kaew to be his dearest beloved. My. Heart. The OST.

Kaew allows it, and they exchange sweet cheek kisses.

Chuay interrupts because they’re needed for The Plan!

They meet at the tea shop. Phop’s gotta leave for work, but promises once they catch the opium smugglers, he will ask his father for Kaew’s hand in marriage.

But wait! Nakun realizes the person carrying the sword was left-handed. Phop obviously knows who this could be, but doesn’t say anything.

There’s a series of silly plans that don’t work

Then Jom pretends to be bitten by a snake. Still silly, but it works.

Nakun reaches Pim and guesses she’s avoiding him because the last time she helped him, he disappeared. Nakun promises that once he has Pim’s answer, he’ll leave and never come back. But she wants his forgiveness.

Meanwhile, Phop tells Harn he thinks the temple they’re looking for is in Harn’s Dad’s jurisdiction. Also, he thinks Harn’s (probably left-handed) Dad did it. Harn agrees to help him prove whether his father is guilty or innocent.

This is getting complicated. Phop’s Dad meets Harn’s Dad, and he’s coughing. Why is everyone coughing? He knows Harn’s Dad did it, and Harn’s Dad admits it. But he’s got guys with swords.

In the forest, Harn leads Phop into some anxious violin music. Phop pulls his sword. He’d hoped to be wrong about Harn being involved. Harn’s men then show up with their swords.

Nakun is confused by Pim’s apology. What happened wasn’t her fault. But she’s not apologizing for what happened, she’s apologizing for what’s happening. Then he’s bashed in the back of the head.

I don’t like that Phop is keeping secrets from Nakun

At least it feels like a spur-of-the-moment decision, not something he planned. But it also feels out of character for him to let Nakun put himself in danger that way. Cherd is still out and about, right?

Though it was clunky, I appreciated seeing how Varna and Phop were so similar. Good people who wanted to make their parents happy. Without Nakun’s interference, they would have married and lived bland, acceptable, loveless lives.

I appreciated Jom’s efforts to redeem himself here, but I would have liked to witness him suffering more. The way he kept turning on Kaew before was hard to watch. I feel like he earned just a smidge more unhappiness.

I’m guessing the opium-smuggling plot will wrap up soon, and then it’s the whole “Nakun is actually from another time” issue. While I’ve enjoyed this show, Nakun and Phop have suffered enough, and I’m glad this final challenge will be resolved quickly.
