Cinderella Closet – Episode 11-12 – Recap and Review – End

When last we left our princess and her fairy godmother, they finally kissed!

They’re sweet, adorable, smiling, and then–

Knock knock! It’s Haruka’s Mom.

Hikaru panics, hides himself, and hides a picture of himself in his feminine form.

Then he faces Haruka’s mom, letting Haruka off the hook by politely explaining they are dating. But her mom recognizes him from the camping picture. Hikaru panics again, but can’t explain it, so he apologizes.

Haruka’s Mom takes after Haruka and is only sad she didn’t get to see him dressed up.

Hikaru runs home to change and meet them at the bus station. Haruka’s mother is delighted and wants a picture together. More than that, she knows Haruka was lonely in Tokyo, and knows he’s part of why she’s so much happier now. She asks him to take care of Haruka.

Hikaru looks so relieved.

But he’s uncomfortable walking home because he didn’t have time to do his makeup. Haruka mentions that she misses seeing girl Hikaru. But Hikaru is worried about troubling her by being with such a genderfluid guy.

Haruka likes him whether he’s a guy or a girl. He’s overwhelmed and crouches to hide his face, wishing he were born into Haruka’s family. She wisely points out that siblings can’t date.

He’s glad he met her, and she goes in for the awkward kiss this time.

Can’t have happily ever without sex

New Fairy Godmother Mio is surprised they haven’t done it yet, but tells Haruka to go at her own pace. Yes. This.

The problem is that Hikaru is always busy with school and work. By comparison, Haruka feels inadequate with her part-time job and a school we never see her attend.

To help, Mio offers her a job.

Surprisingly, Hikaru fusses over Haruka becoming busy. But it’s his work that cuts their date short. She goes to Mio’s to work, but while walking home, Hikaru can tell over the phone that she’s down. She explains that he and Mio do things they love while she–

Gets bothered by drunk men on the street. But Prince Kurotaki appears to save her!

Rather than being relieved she’s safe, Hikaru asks why Kurotaki is there. Then, when she hangs out with Kurotaki and Mio, he accuses her of not focusing on her work. She’s hurt.

Walking home with Kurotaki, she tells him she wants to be Hikaru’s equal. But Kurotaki says not knowing what you want to do is normal. Mio and Hikaru are actually the outliers.

Kurotaki is like her, so he’s trying different things. Haruka is encouraged by his advice and realizes she still admires him. But it’s not like how she feels about Hikaru.

Right then, Hikaru calls her, but Kurotaki grabs the phone. Repeating what Hikaru once said to him, he threatens to kill Hikaru if he doesn’t cherish Haruka. He’d better get her, or he’ll take her back.

Hikaru teleports there! And threatens to kill Kurotaki

Kurotaki laughs and leaves them to deal with their nonsense.

Hikaru and Haruka rush to apologize, though I think he’s more at fault. Back at her place, they take care of the whole sex issue.

Suddenly, it’s 5 years later!

Hikaru, now growing famous, gives an interview while Shu and Haruka watch. Hikaru explains he wants makeup to build people’s confidence and make them realize their own beauty. As he talks, he remembers first meeting Haruka.

Hikaru’s parents are watching his interview at home, how… nice?

Haruka now works for a makeup company, and after the interview, she promises Shu she’ll keep trying to be worthy of Hikaru.

Shu asks about marriage, sending Haruka into panicked denials while Hikaru gets a funny expression. As he leaves, Shu whispers good luck to Hikaru.

Meanwhile, Kurotaki has been dumped again. His Fairy-Godmother-Mio tries to help him understand while losing her mind because he’s still accidentally leading her on.

For their 5-year anniversary, Hikaru does Haruka’s makeup

She remembers the first time, when he cast a spell on her.

After picking up a present for him, she overhears people talking about a hit-and-run. Instantly, she panics that it’s Hikaru, and she won’t be able to visit him in the hospital because they aren’t married. This is becoming a theme.

Hikaru arrives, and he’s fine. She collapses and says they should get married right away!

Over dinner, Hikaru says he wanted to propose first and has a glass slipper ready. He wants to be a prince, not a fairy godmother. He’s not a very cool prince, but he wants to be by her side.

Haruka thinks he’s a prince who can do magic, and there’s nothing cooler.

Finally, he slips on the slipper and asks her to marry him! We end with one last awkward kiss and those sweet smiles.

Okay, NOW it’s Happily Ever After!

We just needed the glass slipper and a proposal after a more modern, reasonable passage of time.

These episodes are the weakest for me. Haruka’s final character growth feels rushed and strange, with her still wanting to be “worthy” of Hikaru. It doesn’t help that they crammed several volumes of the comic (available in English here with my affiliate link) into these two short episodes.

The other problem is that, even after Haruka asks, we never see Hikaru in his feminine form again. This is not how he is in the comic, and it seems counter to the message of the entire story.

But with 11 episodes about how anyone who wants to can be a prince or princess, find their partner, and live happily ever after, I’m letting it go.

He is still a soft, non-traditionally masculine Prince who openly shows his feelings to the Princess. Our Princess is not shy to share her feelings, loves him for who he is, and loves herself for who she is, too.

It’s the best kind of fairy tale.
