When last we left our thief and debt collector, the debt collector tried to solve everything alone. That didn’t go well. So it’s Joker’s turn. Sigh.
Grandma comes home from the hospital
They try to kill her with a surprise party. It’s also Jack’s birthday, but he’s stuck working for Evil Boss and Rose. He thinks quitting will be hard since he agreed to be the Evil Boss’s son and reminds Joker he promised not to do anything stupid again. Yay, foreshadowing.
Rose plans a party for Jack that involves her parents and their evil friends. Fun. Nang asks Hoy about Joker. Hoy says he’s a thief who doesn’t enjoy stealing. That is the perfect description.
Ms. Nang mysteriously gives Hoy tarot cards for Joker, Tattoo, and Aran.
Speaking of the last two, Tattoo is making things to sell. Aran is encouraging until he starts crying because he misses his Dad. Hoy walks in and thinks Tattoo is being a bully. More of them, please.
Rose guilts Jack into coming to her party while Joker spies on them from a nearby roof.
5 Hours Earlier
Joker met with Evil Boss to bargain for Jack’s freedom. Evil Boss has something he can steal.
And that was it for 5 hours earlier because we’re back on the roof again. Tattoo, Hoy, and Aran arrive to rescue him from a comedically strong guard. Joker doesn’t want their help because they could all die. Why? How?
Joker declares this is their last mission
Tattoo and Joker enter Rose’s home while Aran directs them remotely around the massive, labyrinth mansion. This is an amusing obstacle. Eventually, Joker ends up disguised as a servant, in a room with Jack, Rose, and the horsemen.
Rose talks about Jack’s dreams but no one cares. Joker spills champagne on people and then they care. He keeps his face averted so Jack doesn’t realize it’s him.
Joker’s there to steal another ring, but this time it’s an evil ring of power. Before he can get it, he has to hide because Rose brings Jack in. Her husband will get the ring, and she wants Jack to be her boyfriend. Jack turns her down. Rose takes it well and they leave.
Joker discovers those tarot cards are clues to get past the security system. They nearly get caught, not Tattoo’s fault this time, but Ms Nang helps Joker hide by getting naked.
Jack calls Evil Boss and apologizes for not being able to marry Rose. Evil Boss says he’s done enough. Jack questions none of this.
It’s still Jack’s birthday
Joker has birthday dumplings. Jack uses spin-the-bottle to admit he likes Joker and ask him to be his boyfriend. Joker agrees and there is making out! Then sex! Talks of marriage! And family! Joker feels he doesn’t know how to be part of a family but Jack reassures him he’d do well.
The next day, Jack and Joker watch Evil Bosses guys go after a debtor, but Jack no longer helps people.
Evil Boss has evil plans and Save is still helping him. Hope wants Save to escape but Evil Boss has too much power. I want more time with Tattoo and Aran and less with Save and Hope.
Toi Ting’s father abandons her so Joker and Jack take her in. They open the school and Aran’s top is amazing. He made Trainer Teacher buttons for him and Tattoo but gives his to Hoy when he gets jealous.
Rose is there with women dressed like Vegas showgirls.
Joker’s dad shows up to teach math
Jack invited him. I didn’t know Jack knew Joker’s father was the doctor, but in one conversation he convinced the rigid older man to heal a decades-long rift.
Joker introduces Toi Ting as the daughter he’s adopting and introduces Jack as his boyfriend. I’m overwhelmed.
Speaking of families, Ms Nang and Evil Boss are siblings. Sorry, I suspected anything more. Rose’s parents killed their parents, but they are in disagreement over what to do now.
Because Evil Boss has started a war on everyone
Our guys are teaching happily at school when Rose gets a text about her office being trashed and Hoy learns the shrine is under attack. Everyone already knows this is Joker’s fault, including Joker. He needs to leave but reassures Toi Ting he’ll come back, even if it’s as a ghost.
Jack, like me, has no idea what’s going on. Joker wants to know if it’s okay he made another mistake. Jack says he trusts him and Joker can tell him later.
At Rose’s loan office, they learn from Save that all the money was stolen. Rose promises more money. They speculate that Evil Boss stole the ring and that’s why all this is happening. Save thinks the Joker thief did it. Jack says if it was him, they’ll have to kill him. Why? What’s happening?
A debtor falls from the roof and Jack reviews their loan documents. Save tells Hope about his involvement while standing behind Jack. Jack doesn’t hear it but figures it out. He punches Hope because of Save. Save gives the familiar “we had no choice” explanation.
Joker speaks into a megaphone to people sitting in front of him
He’s at the shrine trying to rally everyone against Evil Boss. It’s not working.
Now that she helped him get the ring, Nang is giving up because Evil Boss has too much power. Rose’s parents have fled. Despite this, Hoy nods encouragingly until Nang agrees to join the fight and rally everyone.
But instead of Evil Boss’s men, there are children at the door. This was all a part of some master plan to get the children. Toi Ting led Jack’s old Taekwondo nemesis away so the others could escape. But he grabs her and drops her over a balcony.
Joker, Tattoo, Hoy, and Aran are at the hospital with her. Joker’s Dad will work on her. Jack shows up and learns Joker gave the ring to Evil Boss. Jack says “Why does it have to be you again?”
That escalated fast
The show’s ambitions are out of control. I get it. There’s an evil ring that arbitrarily grants power and gets misused. It’s the opposite of Jack’s parent’s ring, which symbolizes love and hope.
Yes, the writing has been weak from the beginning. But I don’t mind silly heists that don’t make sense while our leads are flirting. Now that small children are near death and Jack is talking about killing Joker, it’s no fun anymore.
I don’t understand what Evil Boss will achieve by destroying all these people whose money he needs. I don’t understand his plan.
Jack is frustrating me. Certainly, Joker shouldn’t have stolen the ring without talking to him. This late in the show I wish they were communicating. At all. But Jack keeps thinking others play fair and trying to help while actually perpetuating the unfair system trapping everyone. He doesn’t think very hard about anything. Then he judges Joker like he created the situation when it’s really Evil Boss.
I wanted scenes with Jack learning about Joker’s family. I want to see the two of them talking through their issues. It feels like they barely spent time together in these two episodes.
And more of Aran’s shirts. Definitely more of those.
