Takeda Kouhei as Nozue and Kimura Tatsunari as Togawa in episode 3 of Old Fashioned Cupcake

Old Fashioned Cupcake  – Episode 3 – Recap and Review

Recap
Togawa and Nozue are still eating fancy desserts together. Nozue has a new smartphone he can’t operate and Togawa is taking a lot of pictures, still pretending to be a young girl. But Nozue is no longer interested in pretending, he knows he can have fun now as himself.

He wants to thank Togawa for helping him get to this better place with his body, which stuns Togawa. Nozue just means he’ll make him dinner and clean his place up.

Nozue makes him a fantastic-looking dinner, and jokes about the names of the ingredients lead to plans to go to the zoo next weekend. They tease each other about being good catches and before you know it are talking about jerking off. Togawa, with hamster cheeks full of food, says he jerks off thinking about the person he likes.

At his own place, Nozue thinks about Togawa liking someone. He texts about their upcoming weekend plans. He keeps checking and doesn’t get a reply but does get the sneezes. He goes to work in a mask and a mood and avoids Togawa the whole time. He then goes out with coworkers to drink when it’s mentioned Togawa isn’t going.

Togawa shows up anyway and learns Nozue left early not feeling well. Nozue is sitting outside, looking dazed and sick, checking his messages and watching a video of Togawa he accidentally took instead of a picture.

Togawa takes him home and care for him. He asks why Nozue was avoiding him, and Nozue felt he was too involved in Togawa’s personal life for a boss. Togawa says Nozue isn’t just a boss, he’s an important person and all the things they do are important. Nozue is then indignant he never replied about their zoo plans.

But Togawa did reply, Nozue just can’t operate his phone. Togawa scolds him and Nozue is apologetic and surprised at all the messages. Togawa tucks him in bed and leaves. Nozue’s mood is lifted as he sees Togawa’s replies.

And we see Togawa sending them, all day. We also see that when Togawa came back to get Nozue’s key he gave the sleeping man a little sniff-kiss.

Thoughts
That last moment is a small miss-step I think the show makes. It’s confusing as to what actually happens there, and I know people who misunderstood something sinister in Togawa’s getting the key. He’s just getting it to lock the door up as he leaves, which is clear in the manga but more confusing here.

In the manga, it goes straight from Nozue apologizing to Togawa leaving and getting the key, with presumably a little time skip because Nozue is asleep. In the drama, they’ve added Nozue looking at the messages and the flashbacks to Togawa sending them, but removed Togawa starting to go to the door, confusing up the timeline so it’s easy to misunderstand when Togawa is coming back. It’s like he snuck in the middle of the night to molest Nozue and steal his key. Not sure why they couldn’t make it clearer what was going on.

But otherwise, it’s another lovely episode. Nozue has had the important realization that he doesn’t need to fantasize about being someone else, but this means Togawa no longer has his anti-aging excuses to be with him. Tatsunari Kimura, playing Togawa, is so good at keeping Togawa’s serious intensity while also letting us see his concern and desire. He’s desperate to hold onto his deeper relationship with Nozue, and we don’t need to see the flashbacks to know it.

The show is far from fast-paced and action-filled, but their relationship does evolve and change in each short episode in a satisfying way. They figure out that they want to keep spending time together even though Nozue is in a better place.

And like the past two episodes, with the cigarettes and the suit, there’s another physical object to illustrate these changes. In a nice twist though, rather than being reassuring proof to Togawa of the power of his efforts, the phone only causes problems. For a day anyway.
