Ranne gazes up at Phatee now that he's joined the group

The Crow Club – Episode 5-6 – Recap and Review

When we last left our first of four couples, they got together!

Phatee and Ranne sing together, their faces inches apart

And our next couple is: Ranne and Phatee!

Flashback to Valentine’s Day! At… High School? Phatee is on stage with a guitar. He nervously looks into the audience, where Ranne is watching him.

Next, they’re singing at the club, and Ranne wants Phatee to audition for the group. Phatee turns to Ranne and accidental nose kiss!

Except it was all Phatee’s hot, hot dream?

Ranne is desperate, so he tricks Phatee into taking a crow club job to accompany him for the day. I’m confused about whether they sang together at the club and if Phatee turned him down again. Was the dream real?

Anyway, they shop, stand close together, and staaaaaaaaaaare. Phatee keeps turning him down, but Ranne keeps smiling.

Then, Ranne steals a guitar from some woman so he can force Phatee to play and sing. He has enough compassion to turn the seat around and have Phatee look at him.

Phatee is smiling as he sings with Ranne in front of an audience

They sing together, attract an audience, and Phatee seems to enjoy it!

Although after he looks kinda panicky.

Sun has switched to working at the bar, trying to get a different perspective for his novel. Maybe he should change what he’s writing, like “someone” (Talay) once suggested. He could write adult fiction. Does Talay want to do adult things with him? Not as a job.

Didn’t Talay already proposition Sun? Whatever, kissssssssing!

They’re off to Talay’s, because Sun will only let a special person come to his place. And he’ll probably never have a special person. Like Talay doesn’t believe in love? These two are emo.

Now Tangmo is stuck with Yoyeh, and HAS to help him lift the heavy beer. He gets upset about an injury to Yoyeh’s hand, telling him to quit doing extra work and focus on the competition.

Since Yoyeh needs money, Tangmo gives him money for helping out at the club. Yoyeh agrees, but wants to be paid regularly. Tricky, because Tangmo does not have much more money.

Tangmo looks earnest as he gives Phatee advice

Phatee returns to the club looking spacey, and everyone gets nosy

Tangmo, still denying Yoyeh is his ex, tells Phatee that some chances, if not seized, go away.

So Phatee shows up just in time to audition. Ranne is so happy, it’s very cute.

Phatee does a very Phatee audition. They make him dance. He’s terrible. Then it’s time for singing. They won’t let him sing with his back to them, so he’s figuring out what to do when Ranne bursts in! He wants to sing with Phatee.

He has Phatee look at him while they sing. Afterward, the judges leave without a word.

Phatee is ready to leave too. He’s certain they don’t want him. Ranne points out that the audience was singing with him the other day. He thinks Phatee should have more confidence, but he hasn’t seen Phatee dance.

Ranne looks upset as his group runs out of options

After he leaves, the manager/boss/whatever comes in with a contract

Phatee and Ranne were So Good she rushed to get the contract ready!

So, how to get him to agree? Despite vowing to make it happen, Ranne only sends Phatee a text. He knows Phatee is happy when he’s singing, and if he changes his mind about signing the contract, Ranne is waiting.

Flashback to their tragic past! That song Phatee was playing was a special one Ranne requested. So that he could romantically give a girl a flower. Phatee doesn’t seem to have expected that, and looks crushed.

He still has pictures from that day, and song lyrics with Ranne’s name and a HEART. Very cute.

Phatee arrives as the group is about to terminate their contracts

Phatee gets to save the day at the last minute, AGAIN

They are JUST ABOUT to sign their trainee contract cancellation papers when Phatee arrives! He agrees to be a trainee and debut. And he gets a hug! Introvert/Extrovert Love!

Ranne thanks him for trusting him and agreeing to do this. Phatee nods

Everyone is jumping and excited! Except Phatee.

Later, Phatee tells Linda he can’t work for her anymore because of the trainee contract. She’s cool with it, and he never liked taking jobs at the club anyway. She’ll capitalize on it if he becomes famous.

Also, she’ll let him keep his room. Linda is a softy. Phatee hugs her, and somehow she’s the awkward one.

So we don’t forget he exists, Vann visits from Japan! Linda pretends to be irritated that no one follows her rules. She already knows about Talay and Sun.

Talay insists it’s only temporary. Then immediately checks a text from Sun.

Sun gazes at a one of Talay's painting's while standing next to him

He left an earring at Sun’s, but I thought Sun only lets special people over?

Maybe it was a hotel room?

Anyway, Talay takes his temporary fling to his… studio? There are books. And paintings. And a big screen displaying info about him and the art.

He gives Sun a small canvas and pen, and Sun writes in English: “You cannot find peace by avoiding life.” Talay instantly recognizes this as Virginia Woolf. Art nerds, I love them.

Sun wants Talay to paint him, but Talay doesn’t paint people. Sun thinks he’d do a good job, so Talay scolds him for judging him by his face. Huh? Despite that, Sun returns his earring and asks if he left anything else in his room. So, it was his place?

Sun wants to confirm there will be a next time, and Talay wants to see how today goes.

Ranne and his group stand waiting for good news

Ranne’s …. Group? Boy Band? Will debut in 3 months

They cheer and hug! Except Phatee.

Phatee accidentally reveals he knows Ranne is the oldest, but lies about how he knows.

Time for Phatee to learn to dance! He’s terrible, but Ranne offers to help him. Phatee doesn’t really agree, but that never stops Ranne.

Practice montage time! Ranne touches Phatee’s chest! And his arms! Phatee stares at Ranne! His dancing improves!

Over late-night dinner, Ranne praises Phatee for working so hard at new and difficult things. Phatee tells Ranne he’s always been his inspiration.

Then Ranne adjusts his camera. This was for content. He wonders what Phatee meant by “always,” and Phatee claims it was for content. Nice. Ranne pinches Phatee’s cheek to make him smile, and now they have the STARES.

Leaning in! Like they’re going to kiss! The camera is watching! They back away!

Manager/boss agrees that Phatee’s song will be their debut song! Everyone is excited! Even Phatee! In a standing-there way.

Talay looks sincere and kind as he gives Tangmo advice

Phatee is at the Crow Club, and that totally worthless Talay is checking on him

Eventually we will learn why Talay is so hard on himself, right? He seems so nice.

Anyway, he advises Phatee to make the most of his time with Ranne. Even if it’s a dream he wakes up from, he can always go back to sleep or make his dream reality.

But oh no! The evil overlords used AI to completely change their song! The drummer throws a fit and leaves. The manager/whatever doesn’t care. They can just as easily be a group of 4. She arbitrarily gives them 3 days to solve this.

Ranne adamantly does not want to lose a group/band member. But he can’t reach the drummer.

Talay helps again by realizing the drummer’s sister contacted the Crow Club for a fake boyfriend. So, Phatee takes the job! Thankfully, the drummer’s parents don’t know what their son’s group/band members look like!

After being startled by his sister’s new “boyfriend”, the drummer plays along until he and Phatee can talk. He tells Phatee that the evil overlords only care about Ranne and Phatee because their ship has become popular. They’re even getting jobs together that Ranne is keeping secret so it doesn’t stress Phatee.

Phatee asks if he gets them to stop using the AI, will the drummer come back? The drummer thinks he’s not important, but Phatee says he is.

Ranne stopped by the Crow Club, and Tangmo took him to Phatee’s room to wait. There he snoops around and discovers the pictures from that Valentine’s Day tucked into the songbook!

Ranne has discovered something and is putting the pieces together

I need to apologize to Mimi and Nay

They are not waitresses. They are crows. In my defense, Linda never TOLD me like she did with the guys.

Also, I’m feeling cheated that Talay and Sun are starting a relationship, even a casual one, and we’re only getting glimpses. When it’s their turn, will we get flashbacks?

Anyway, this is very cute, but the writing is still shallow. I know each couple’s arc has to be short, but that’s why the details (Are they a boy band? Or a band band?) are extra important. And when they’re contradictory, it’s distracting.

Either that, or the subtitles are REALLY bad. Which would still be a problem.

And I feel like if they wanted to be a band, not a boy band, that could have made for more interesting conflict/tension.

But I like an introvert/extrovert pairing, so I like Ranne and Phatee together. Phatee has been yearning for Ranne forever, so it’s Ranne’s turn to fall now. I want to see it.
