Probably my other favorite genre besides romance is horror. What can I say, I go for extremes.
So horror + romance is a fantastic combination. Existential threats, kissing, death, and happily ever afters. What more could anyone want?
Thankfully, strangers make these shows for me, with my recent favorite being Goddess Bless You From Death.
But those were ghosts, and these are zombies. So I’m expecting it to be less about personal trauma and tragic pasts, and more about societal issues and man’s inhumanity to man. Yes, I’ve watched a lot of George Romero.
As of the first two episodes of this show, we’re starting just how I like my zombies. High on action, truly mindless zombies that come from anywhere, and no long explanations about why anything is happening. I hope it sticks to that and skips deeper allegories about social problems.
Enough about the horror, let’s talk romance.
Among the many classic/well worn couple dynamics that work for me is the world-weary, cold-hearted cynic with the pure-hearted optimist. And I think that’s what we’re getting. One is cold, ruthless, and on a mission. The other will risk their life to save a stranger.
In fact, our optimist may be SO good that zombie bites can’t hurt him, which is why our cold-hearted guy takes any interest in him.
Of course, I’m most excited for them to move past that setup and start falling in love. I want to see our cold, ruthless guy warm up and our optimist get throught some hard times.
And fight zombies. That too.
